Profile:
Named
"Burewala Express" after his hometown in central Punjab,
Waqar Younis brought back the danger, the fear, and the
devastation into fast bowling that was associated with greats like
Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Imran Khan, and Dennis Lillie
at the peak of their careers. After an innocuous performance in
his debut against India at home in 1989, Waqar stormed into the
international scene in 1990, with his amazing feats at the
listless Sharjah wicket and has since then been possibly the most
feared bowler in recent history.
Waqar's career has been interrupted by a recurring back problem,
which caused him to miss the 1992 World Cup and most of the 1995
cricketing year. Despite these lapses in his career, Waqar holds
the record for reaching 200 wickets in the least number of Tests
jointly with Dennis Lillie. Waqar specializes in moving the old
ball a long way both into and away from the batsmen. His
in-swinging yorkers have been referred to as
"toe-crushers," the validity of which many batsmen can
testify.
The peak of Waqar's illustrious career started with the 1990 tour
of New Zealand to Pakistan and reached its climax in the tour of
England in 1992, where he combined with Wasim Akram to form one of
the deadliest duo of fast bowlers in the history of Test cricket.
Waqar has played county cricket for Surrey and Glamorgan, where
his performances have not been less then outstanding. In
Pakistan's domestic circuit, he has played for the United Bank
limited and Redco Pakistan Limited along with the city teams of
Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, and Multan.
The year 2000 has not been fruitful for this Pakistani pace man.
In the 10 Test matches played during this period, he has claimed
34 wickets at an average of 25.91, his best figures being four for
40 against Sri Lanka at Galle.
