History Formerly four separate British colonies of which two had previously been Dutch. In 1910 the Union of South Africa was formed, in 1961 South Africa's Apartheid policy resulted in its exclusion from the commonwealth and a period of international isolation. However in the early 90s progress was made and by 1994 South Africa had a new government following free-and-fair elections.
