Profile:
Dilhara
Fernando is a right arm fast bowler capable of generating real
pace from a powerful slingy action. At school, his first love was
basketball before he developed into a fast bowler and was picked
for the Sri Lanka U19 team that toured India in 1997. He then had
a stint at the Chennai-based MRF Fast Bowlers clinic in 1998
before being picked to play for Sri Lanka A and then making his
Test debut against Pakistan in June 2000. Dropped after a modest
performance he returned for the tour of South Africa 2000, where
he started with a five-wicket haul in the first Test in Durban.
Although wayward and expensive during the early part of his Test
career, he trained hard under the close supervision of fast
bowling coach Rumesh Ratnayake to emerge as a real destructive
force. Suffered from a debilitating back injury between Oct
2001-May 2002 but is now back to full fitness.
