Profile:
Kumar
Sangakkara, an elegant left-hander and increasingly accomplished
wicket keeper, burst on to the international scene during the
Singer Series against South Africa and Pakistan in July 2000 after
attracting the attention of the national selectors with his A-team
performances. Since then he has established himself in the Test
team at the number three position, compiling four Test centuries
and averaging 77.23 in 11 matches during the 2001-02 season to
become the FICA Young Player of the Year. Predominantly a
back-foot player, he struggled during a 3-Test series in England
but has had success in South Africa with the A team in 1998 and
national side in 2000-01. Academically minded, with deep passion
for English literature, he continues to study law at Colombo
University during rare breaks in the international cricket
calendar. Schooled at Trinity College in Kandy, he excelled in a
variety of sports to become an all-island champion in both
badminton and tennis. Already touted as a future national captain.
