Profile:
Were
West Indian fast bowlers still terrorising opponents with an
unquenchable zeal, Pedro Collins would not be an international
cricketer. The reign of the fast-and-nasty is over though, and
Collins could just head a new generation of fast-medium bowlers.
A tall left-armer, Collins shapes the ball away
from the right-hander. He is not lightning quick, but can be
dangerous when he pitches the ball up. With the bat, Collins is
limited, but could, with work, turn himself into a decent
night-watchman.
Collins made his Test debut against Australia
in 1999, picking up Steve Waugh in an impressive start. He would
dismiss Waugh twice more in the series, and had emerged as a solid
performer.
After a disappointing start to his ODI career,
Collins spent time in the wilderness. He continued bowling well
for Barbados, with a higher arm and better-looking action, and was
selected for West Indies 2001 tour to Southern Africa. He failed
to make a huge impact, but was retained for the trip to Sri Lanka.
He bowled with accuracy in the one-day series in Sri Lanka, and
picked up four wickets in the second Test.
Without spectacular figures, Collins was
retained for the recent series with India. Again, he didn't
dominate, but swung the ball away from Sachin Tendulkar, sending
the little master back to the pavilion three times in the series.
Collins found some real success against New Zealand, returning
figures of 6/76 in the first Test. The 26-year-old Bajan then
destroyed New Zealand's middle order with 3/33 to help his side to
a one-day victory.
This is still a fledgling
Test career, but the determination which Collins shows is
impressive. He is a genuine swinger of the ball, and will always
trouble the right-hander outside off-stump. It is impressive to
note that the majority of his victims thus far are top order
batsmen and that he does not simply mop up the tail.
