FASHION UPDATE
The ethnic divide |
| |
Summer
is the best time to reconnect with your ethnic roots. It's when thick
denim jeans become a burden and when the 'style soul' can only find
comfort in the lightest of fabrics in the most minimalist of ways.
However, the fact that summer will inevitably leave you hot and sweaty
is no reason to send your soul to fashion hell. No need to look like
a rag on fire.
Designers have made being trendy very simple this year. They are adding
shine and bling, instead of the usual lace and ribbon, to light fabrics
like lawn and voile. Internationally, the ethnic trend has been seen
on runways - in Pakistan, designers are interpreting it in their own
way. Faiza Samee, in her prêt line of summery floral tunics
(available at Ensemble, Karachi) has added large rounds sequins on
collars and cuffs. The effect: pure brilliance.
Sonya Battla, on her signature shirts and kurtas, has given a luxurious
accent of satin and hence they glow. It turns an ordinary shirt around
to be extraordinary. Try giving a bright modern print an ethnic brocade
neckline or an ethnic print a dose of sequins. Opposites attract,
it's a long established formula.
