Hotstepper of the week
Maheen

Few people have their finger on the pulse of the nation while fewer still have the vision to take things forward. In terms of fashion, this is exactly what designer Maheen has done. Known to be the first fashion designer who refused to bow down to mass taste, she stuck to her guns with a shop since the beginning. Her contemporaries were busy making bridals and minting money in those days. Maheen may not have made so much, but she did innovate.

Then, when she launched her prêt line Gulabo some years ago, it was a step in a new direction. This was street wear for urban Pakistan, inspired by designs on the buses, trucks and rickshaws that run on the roads of Pakistan. It was fun, colourful, in your face and screamed attitude, all while being uniquely Pakistani at the same time. It is this that she took to London for the Pakistan Day Parade recently. And one saw the vision of Maheen in a new light. These clothes are cool enough to fit right in onto the streets of London.

So as August 14 is round the corner, do pick up one of these fun, colourfully and 100 percent Pakistani items. And we suggest you colour your choice green! Pakistan zindabad!
