FASHION UPDATE

Recessionista chic

In a recent interview with David Letterman, Anna Wintour was asked what a fashion consumer would do if they used to spend a $100 on themselves and now had their budget cut down to 20 - what could they buy? The Vogue editor instantly replied: "A lipstick!"
That answer left one thinking: 'What can you buy in Pakistan for 100 rupees to update your look?' (One would safely assume that since twenty rupees barely buys you a soft drink, a cosmetic or piece of apparel would be quite out of the question!) This week's edition of Flash gives you ideas on how to update the way you look for a 100 rupees.
Nail polish: Brands like Etude are available everywhere and their range of colours is quite good. It may be the most basic of purchases, but new nail colour can do wonders for your look. If you wear conventional pastel nail colours, update it to a racy red or this season's quirky yellow.

Scarves: Scarves are the cheapest item one can buy within a 100 rupees - from the roadside stalls that sell them for up to 50 bucks to the faux pashminas sold at Zainab Market. As autumn rolls in, scarves will definitely be a wardrobe staple and if you live in a city where autumn is just a textbook term, buy scarves to wear as belts with jeans or dresses (seen on Anne Hathaway here).

Wardrobe wonders: Clean out your closet and take out all the shirts and trousers you have amassed  that don't fit anymore and get them fixed instead! Tailors charge minimal amounts for altering clothes. If something is unfixable (or you know you'll never lose 20 pounds in a day to be able to fit into it) exchange it with a friend, cousin, sibling for something they might have languishing in their closet that you could wear!
