The rhythm is gonna get you!
Instep presents the 10 hottest songs of the year that are rocking us all this wedding season…
By Aamna Haider Isani and Ayecha Ahmed

The best thing about weddings is the mehndi and other than the yummy mitthai passed around, the best thing about mehndis is dancing. We live in a conventional society where dancing is generally looked down upon, yet mehndi dances are legit and joyfully put up a night that becomes one huge dance session. It's when everyone hits the dance floor and no one objects. And songs that play at mehndis change every year, depending upon the hottest tracks on Bollywood's dance radar. While Mussarrat Nazir and old folk classics play on the dholki, it's the rhythm of these dances that really get you. Here are Instep's top ten pick of trailblazers that are setting dance floors on fire at mehndis this year. So make sure your DJ has this selection and prepare to kick your shoes off and jam tonight. If nothing else, it'll justify the gulab jammuns you've been popping!

1. 'Deewangee Deewangee'
Film: Om Shanti Om

Thanks to Shah Rukh Khan, everyone dancing to this track feels like a star. It gets all age groups back on their feet; if Dharmu, Jeetu and Rekha can do it, why can't we, they stand up thinking. It's such an irresistible dance number.

2. 'Dard-e-Disco'
Film: Om Shanti Om

Dil mein mere hai Dard-e-Disco…what a line! For everyone who has seen this film, this song epitomizes SRK's love for dance and that love is contagious. This track, though not very fast, is for real dancers who can hold themselves confidently on a relatively slow beat.

3. 'Pump Up The Jam'
Film: Partner

'Dard-e-Disco' is for dancing pros but this is one track no-one can resist. The beat is fast, the tempo is catchy and you'll be footloose and fancy in no time. Though Govinda and Salman Khan's moves are hard to imitate, the good thing is anything goes with this track; it's so versatile. So pump up the jam, pump it up…

4. 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom'
Film: Jhoom Barabar Jhoom

While 'Pump Up The Jam' is the perfect song for jam sessions, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is that number which requires dance-practice sessions at dholkis that precede the big night. You'll ideally have two boys and two girls dancing to this one, trying to get the moves right but obviously missing a couple of steps in the final performance. An enjoyable song, nevertheless, 'JBJ' even has a remix for jam session replay.

5. 'Maujan Hee Maujan'
Film: Jab We Met

'Maujan Hee Maujan' is one of those songs that no one can sit and listen to. If your list of dance songs is done add this one to it as well. The lyrics might be a little difficult to understand but that doesn't stop us from grooving to the tune.

6. 'Chak De Phatey'
Film: Khosla Ka Ghosla

This track is for die-hard Punjabi dancers who love their bhangra as much as their tango. Not an easy song to create a routine and yet it will even make the khalas and chachis dance, and let's not leave dadas and nanas. A song for bhangra loving people of all age group.

7. 'Sajna Di Waree Waree'
Film: Honeymoon Travels Pvt Limited

The video saw the actors having fun with the song. That does not mean one cannot come up with creativity on your own. The theme is spontaneity and this is one of those songs that will work even without synchronised steps.

8. 'Aaja Nachle'
Film: Aaja Nachle

Madhuri Dixit's invitation to dance… who would not want dance to that? The song is a typical Madhuri Dixit song. The song will force even the stiffest of all to manage a thumka. Imitate Madhuri doing the routine and you will be the star of the night... that is if you manage to do it anything like the comeback queen still can!

9. 'Kurriyan Shehr Diyaan'
Film: Laaga Chunari Main Daag

Old dholki anthem turned into a dance number. Get creative with this one, add dandia to it and if dandia is too done outdated for you, choreograph the song with more than three couples. The participants will love dancing to it and the mommies sitting in the audience will sing along. Another fun song for all ages.

10. 'It's Rocking (Yara Kabhi Ishq To Karo)'
Film: Kya Love Story Hai

Love the beat, love Kareena rocking on it. Why not include this rocking number to the list? It's fairly easy to replicate, the routine might be at every shaadi this season, so we advise you to get original. With a beat like that, it can't be that difficult to prepare a 'danceable' routine. Hey, who knows you might do a better job than Kareena!
