Instrumental imagination

Great composition, lyrics, vocals and production - they all work together to make a memorable song. But, some songs do wonders even without lyrics and vocals because their melody just captivates you. That's the power of music: to keep you hooked even without the words to hum along to. Instep presents some enchanting instrumentals to download this week!

'Jugalbandi' – Junoon

Junoon were undoubtedly one of Pakistan's finest musical acts - with nearly ten albums to their credit, unprecedented fame and following at home and abroad, and talent to boot. Be it Inquilaab, Azadi or Parvaaz, Junoon took the market by storm whenever they came out with an album
.
Ali's vocals undoubtedly created magic for Junoon over the years but it's their instrumentals that are equally spellbinding. Remember Salman Ahmed's 'Heer'? The same magic was created when they came out with 'Jugalbandi'. The fusion of tabla with guitars is a treat to listen to. With no lyrics and no strong vocals, the music managed to take the listeners into its magic. It starts off with a mellow tune that is very soothing and calm, plays for some time and then picks up pace.

It's a fusion of eastern and western music with a perfect amalgamation of guitars and tabla. Though it stretches out to more than five minutes time it doesn't let you skip it. 'Jugalbandi' can be heard on Junoon's album Ishq, released in 2001 and is the live version performed at Roskilde, Denmark. If you haven't discovered this song yet - download it to get a real taste of fusion music.

You Need That Fire' – Aamir Zaki

'When it comes to Pakistani music and instrumentals - how can one forget guitar sensation Aamir Zaki? His hit single 'Mera Pyaar' had Pakistani music aficionados raving after the song made its debut on the one television show that focused on music! (That does seem eons ago!) In 1995, Aamir released his solo album Signature featuring 'You Need That Fire'. Signature showcases Aamir's fondness for progressive guitar riffs, frenzied scale changes and yet creating a music friendly environment around.

For an instrumental, the track stretches beyond a good five minutes but it definitely doesn't become monotonous. Download 'You Need That Fire' to hear the guitar genius weave his magic!

'Rebel Heart'– The Corrs

One of Ireland's much loved imports (after U2) are The Corrs - the quartet that has won hearts worldwide. They've done a number of instrumentals in the past, which have all been great. And one can get a great feel of the musical talent this band has by their MTV Unplugged sessions, which are a must-buy as well! But this week the song you must download by this talented quartet is 'Rebel Heart', which is an amazing piece of work.

'Rebel Heart' starts off slow with just a violin playing and then other instruments join in as it moves forward. The whole song will leave you mesmerized.

Rebel Heart' features on The Corrs' third album In Blue, which was released in 2000.
The song not only features The Corrs' signature violin, but also the bodhran and tin whistle.
It was composed especially by Sharon Corr for the BBC Ireland four-part series, Rebel Heart, and was nominated for a Grammy in January 2001.
But whatever the history is behind the song, the bottom line remains… it's an exceptional melody.

'The Unfeeling Kiss' – Gabriel Yared
Gabriel Yared is a Lebanese musician who has composed music for a number of movies and has worked with major directors such as Jean-Jacques Beineix, Robert Altman and Jean-Jacques Annaud. He has won 11 awards and received around 20 nominations in different award ceremonies. And while one may have heard his work in several films, one of the best songs to download by Gabriel Yared is 'The Unfeeling Kiss', off the soundtrack of the 1998 Hollywood flick City of Angels. The movie fared extremely well at the box office - as did the song on the charts! This instrumental kicks off slow with a smooth guitar sound that later on catches up with other instruments.

The music doesn't fluctuate endlessly from a high note to a lower one and cause aural confusion but is consistently harmonious. By the time it ends, it switches its pace towards being mellow and ends with that note creating a dramatic ambiance all around you! Download this song to relive the classic film that City of Angels is - and appreciate an unchained melody!
