Hotstepper of the Week
Shamoon Sultan
|
| |
Until
now, his critics have argued that he is more of a textile designer
than a fashion designer, but with the official launch of his prêt
line - Khaadi Khas - Shamoon Sultan proves that he is equal parts
of both. The flagship prêt store opened on Zamzama last week
and is appropriately situated in the same lane as Sonya Battla, Generation
and Cynosure. It sure has become a busy lane for fashion.
In a couple of years, Shamoon has taken his business from a small
retail outlet to a three storey building on Zamzama and outlets all
over the country featuring fabric, clothes, shoes, bags, home furnishings
and more.
The best thing is that everything is tasteful, stylish and follows
the signature of the fashion label.
Other than the revival of the hand-spun yarn, the name Khaadi has
become synonymous with colour and a balanced mix of the east and west.

But
there's more applause in store for Shamoon. A couple of months ago
he enrolled in a British Council program – The International
Young Fashion Entrepreneur Award – and was selected from this
region. The British Council is divided into thirteen regions world
wide and that means that he will be competing with twelve other finalists
in London, where he is right now.
It was no small achievement to qualify in this group, considering
other "senior" fashion designers applied from here too,
though Shamoon diplomatically refrains from naming them! But judging
from the criteria - a fashion entrepreneur who has done something
for the country, the community and even the environment – he
definitely was the right choice. Here's to individuals who are carving
a better future for fashion in Pakistan. |
