Hotsteppers of the week
Laal

Pakistani music is all set to be set afire with the inspiring and all-too-relevant words of noted poets Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Habib Jalib. The band Laal are planning to release their debut album, Umeed-e-Seher, in a few weeks. Known for their rendition of Habib Jalib's poem Musheer, in a song titled 'Mainay Uss Se Yeh Kaha' which became rather popular during the emergency as well as the heavy airplay it received when Geo TV ran a video with a montage of political moments, featuring the song. Laal, comprising of Taimur Rahman, Shahram Azhar, Haider Rahman and Mahvash Waqar were on a whirlwind visit of Karachi during the week to talk about their upcoming album, Umeed-e-Seher.
The album features the poetry of Jalib, Faiz as well as a poem by Aitzaz Ahsan and the band's own verses. And they are truly trailblazers: the music we previewed at their live performances had us in raptures, since their quotient of inspirational, reactionary and relevant music is exactly what the Pakistani music scene needs.

Their performance in Karachi, which was telecast live, had the likes of Aitzaz Ahsan in attendance.
Laal's firebrand music is a reactionary message to the world we live in, and with songs that talk about activism, women empowerment and free thought; our hotstepper of the week, Laal, and their album, will definitely be one to watch out for.
