It’s between prêt potential
and the passioniate couturiers
Fashion is boiling down to two segments and the divide has
shifted from Lahore and Karachi to prêt a porter and couture.
Instep takes an intensive look into what went into the fashion
industry last year and what came out of it. Here is our evaluation
of who will and should win at the
Citigold Lux Style Awards this year…
|
|
Model
of the Year Female
Nominees: Fayeza Ansari, Mehreen Syed, Neha Ahmed, Sunita Marshal
and Tooba Siddiqui
Who will win: Neha Ahmed because she’s been very prolific as
far as shoots go and has managed to strike a balance between bridal
and prêt shoots.
Who should win: Fayeza Ansari because she carries the modeling profession
forward with the grace that has been Vinny’s trademark. It’ll
take her time before she masters the business of modeling, but as
far as looks are concerned, she looks equally good in print and on
ramp and she stays away from bridal shoots. That’s the kind
of girl we need to be promoting. |

Model of the Year Male
Nominees: Abdullah Ejaz, Adnan Malik, Ameerzeb Khan,
Emmad Erfani and Rizwan Haider
Who will win: Abdullah Ejaz because Khawar still has a strong hold
on the mass of male shoots coming out of Pakistan and Abdullah,
being Khawar’s golden boy gets maximum exposure.
Who should win: Adnan Malik because not only does he always manage
to look dapper, but he has also got the personality to take male
modeling a notch higher. Pakistan needs models who can do more than
simply look good – and with his background, Adnan fits the
bill perfectly.
Achievement in Fashion Design ten plus years
Nominees: Iman (Imrana) Ahmed at Body Focus, Nilofer
Shahid, Rizwan Beyg, Sana Safinaz, Umar Sayeed
Who will win: Rizwan Beyg because with that Carnival collection
as evidence, we need not say more.
Who should win: Rizwan Beyg. And we can take the predictions a year
ahead and say that Nilofer Shahid will win for 2007 as she’s
got Paris Fashion Week as the most flamboyant feather in her cap.
That is, unless Umar Sayeed overwhelms all fashion sense at Carnival
de Couture this year. It’ll be an interesting year, if nothing
else.

Best Menswear Designer
Nominees: Amir Adnan, Ammar Belal, Deepak Perwani,
Hassan Shheryar Yasin (HSY), Munib Nawaz
Who will win: Munib Nawaz, because he has been the most prolific
designer in menswear. His strategy of dressing musicians has worked
magic by putting him the lime light.
Who should win: Deepak Perwani, because let’s face it, the
man is just more innovative. It’s just that he has lost his
profile somewhat. After his fantastic 10 years of Deepak Perwani
show, Deepak has gone underground but has resurfaced enough times
last year to show that his understanding of menswear still rocks!

Emerging Talent
in Fashion
Nominees:
Annie Khan (model), Ismail Farid (designer), Maheen Karim (designer),
Maram Aabroo (photographers), Nadia Ali (model)
Who will win: Maram Aabroo because they are good at what they do
and they have put a lot of effort into raising their profile last
year.
Who should win: Maheen Karim, who is better than good. As a nominee
for Emerging Talent, she pushes the envelope towards excellence
and should be acknowledged for that. |
|
Best Fashion Photographer
Nominees: Ather Shahzad, Deevees, Guddu and Shani,
Khawar Riaz and Shamyl Khuhro
Who will win: Deevees because they have done a lot of interesting
work last year
Who should win: Shamyl Khuhro because he’s done some fantastic
work that borders on cutting edge original; because he photographs
without wanting to monopolize the creative process by styling as
well and because he is the unsung hero of fashion photography in
Pakistan.
Best Hair
and Makeup Artist
Nominees:
Creative Team at Nabila’s, Khawar Riaz, Munnazza Rizwan, Sabs
and Shahzad Raza
Who will win: Creative Team at Nabila’s
Who should win: Creative Team at Nabila’s, hands down. With
the emergence of Zinc, and the amount of work they have collectively
done – fashion shoots, shows, music videos and ad campaigns,
the Creative Teams at Nabila’s is an institution that remains
unchallenged in the industry.
Best Pret Wear Designer
|
|
|
Nominees: Gulabo by Maheen Khan, Pink by Karma,
Samyra by Samyra Rashid, Sonya by Sonya Battla and Sublime by Sara
Shahid
Who will win: Sara Shahid because she is one of the few designers
from Lahore who has maintained her loyalty to prêt and has
also managed to take her presence beyond one city.
Who should win: Sonya Battla because she has a more mature hold
on patterns and styles. Her clothes hint at perfection in design
and silhouette, and she has a signature like none other.
Best Couture Designer
Nominees: Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, Karma, Nomi Ansari,
Rouge and Saadia Mirza
Who will win: Nomi Ansari because he did manage to stay on the front
line last year
Who should win: Saadia Mirza because she is known for the beautiful
couture she does and she does it with a difference. Her designs
borrow from a very international sensibility and she does gowns
just as well (or better) than she does ghararas.
Best Retail Brand
Nominees: ABCD, Crossroads, FNKAsia, Generation
and Khaadi
Who will win: Khaadi is the ‘natural’ choice because
they have created the right product with the right awareness around
it.
Who
should win: Crossroads because they are creating in Pakistan what
Zara, Topshop or Mango deliver to the international market. Crossroads
is a brand that generates inexpensive, smart and internationally
tuned collections and with all the efforts they have been putting
into label awareness, collections and campaigns they deserve to
win.
