Dharmendra made his comeback into Bollywood with Life in a Metro but
with Apne, it is the first time that the legendary actor has appeared
with his two sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol. For that reason alone, the
film has done well at the box office, however Apne is hardly the film
that merits the credit of re-launching Dharmendra as an actor. Keeping
in mind his crusade of waiting for the "right script", the
movie leaves one with the feeling that the cinema icon deserved much
better.
Directed by Anil Sharma, the story revolves around Baldev Singh Chaudhary
(Dharmendra) who was a champion boxer of his own times. However, Baldev
was incriminated in false charges of doping and got banned for fifteen
years. He wanted his son Angat (Sunny) to carry on his legacy but
Angat refuses to.
With Angat opting for business management instead, bitterness sets
in Baldev's heart and the movie portrays the various repercussions
of this war of ideologies between father and son. That is where Karan
(Bobby Deol) steps in. Despite having a handicap, he miraculously
recovers when the time is right to fulfill his father's dream.

Although the story line is what many can relate to, the characters
have not been incorporated well enough into the plot. For example,
Bobby Deol's role actually starts getting defined well into half the
film. Moreover, Simran (Shilpa Shetty) and Nandini (Katrina Kaif)
play no substantial role Apne except providing the men a shoulder
to cry on and the viewers colourful eye candy to feast their eyes
on.
Javed Sheikh makes yet another brief appearance in Apne (he has become
quite a Bollywood regular with appearances in Shikhar, Namaste London,
Jaaneman), another attempt to perhaps to cement the cultures of both
countries!
Another element that weakens the execution of the movie is the dialogue
delivery. Imagine having Dharmendra scream out "you have dissed
me!"- Totally incongruous and not in keeping with the whole image
of the persona. The script gets a tad bit too overwhelming by the
end of it and starts stepping into intense melodrama.
The music of the film, composed by Himesh Reshammiya, is also just
about satisfactory at best. Apart from the song 'Dekhun Tujhe To Yaad
Aye' shot on Bobby and Katrina and the title song, 'Apne' that is
making rounds on TV channels, it is a forgettable soundtrack. Looks
like Reshammiya put all efforts in his debut film Aap Ka Suroor that
released on the same day last week.
However, there are certain strong elements that encourage one to watch
the whole movie till the end and make it "bearable". Dharmendra
and Kiron Kher's performances are indeed powerful whereas Sunny and
Bobby, despite being a little over dramatic at times, deliver well.
Katrina Kaif, who braves her own voice-over for this film is well
suited to the role of an America return girl. Shilpa, on the other
hand, after impressing with her last hit Metro fails to have impact
in Apne.
Apne is doing relatively well at the box office and it was a treat
to watch the Deols acting together but one guesses that if they would
have waited a tad longer, they might have got hold of better script
than this one. Because in the final analysis, Apne has falls short
of the people's soaring expectations. In spite of being promised more
than just-a-satisfactory result, one doest not help but get the feeling
of "emptiness" at the end of the movie. Okay, it's a hit
in India, but then, so is Aap Ka Suroor!
