From the editor

Hi folks!

It all started in 1997. A fantasy character took the literary world by storm and redefined the canon of modern literary classics. The readers journeyed through the life of an eleven-year-old boy who survives the attack of the most evil being there could be, when he was just an infant. He enters the wizarding world with an extraordinary past, learns the intricate art of wizardry, befriends supportive and honest friends, and faces the same evil again and again, emerging as the victor every time. Even though this quest leads him to lose his loved ones, his simplicity, bravery and strength of character mesmerize everyone. A fictional character that seems so real-like! People across the globe almost wish that he exists, while he doesn't.

Yes guys, we are talking about our favourite character and, as some people call him, 'the perfect teenage hero', Harry Potter! After enthralling the world with his brave antics for ten years, Harry Potter will soon meet his end, err, we mean to say, the series of one of the most famous and talked about fiction books in the history of world will be soon concluded. *Sigh* :(

Our dear Potterheads, we realise how hard it must be for you to accept the fact that the book going to release tomorrow will be the last one of the series. But since JKR has decided so, we can't really do anything about it. All we can hope is that 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' meets our expectations and, of course, our beloved characters, Ron, Hermione and Harry survive!

So, readers, as promised, we are here this week with our exclusive issue! This issue is meant to celebrate the Harry Potter franchise. We have tried our best to provide you with everything we could about Harry Potter. There are articles comprehensively analysing various characters and situations from the last six books, an interesting quiz, quotes, summaries of the last six books of the series and predictions about what would be there in the up-coming book. In short a sure treat for the Potter maniacs out there!

For those (unimaginative) people who don't like Harry Potter, we have some of our regular pages as well.

Let's not engage you in our chit chat anymore. Go ahead and devour the issue. Happy reading - both the issue and the book!

Till next week,

Bye!

Dear editor

Better late...

Dear Eddy,

I'm a regular reader of your magazine, but I wasn't sending you any mail due to my exams. There was a story printed in the issue of June 1, 2007 by Sehar Sheikh that deeply touched my heart. It must be really painful for someone who loves somebody and that person dies or walks away from his life. Love is indeed the greatest thing one can give to others. The sentence that really touched my heart was, 'Her voice once again echoed in his ears!' That one sentence truly expressed the pain that guy had endured after the girl had died. The writer has written this story very well and I think Us magazine should welcome more of this writer's contributions in future.

Suggestions and more suggestions...

Hi Ed,

I am a great fan of Us magazine and enjoy reading it a lot. I request you to please continue the poetry page. Momal Mushtaq's suggestion is a good one and should be considered. And along with a page for Arts, you people should also include a page consisting of interviews of blooming personalities like Shahid Khan Afridi and Aisam-ul-Haq. The cover story of June 29 issue 'How to be successful' was a great source of learning.

Apart from that I totally disagree with Sundus Shaukat's complaints printed in the issue of June 29, 2007 about the prevalent condition of education sector in Peshawar. The students of Peshawar are totally satisfied with their educational system.

What's the solution?

AoA all!

We are witnessing the worst moments of our lives. From Salman Rushdie's controversial Knighthood to the rain-created havoc, unscheduled and prolong power breaks and the Chief Justice crisis, everything is making us frantic. And now, finally the Lal Masjid issue! I would like to advise the Lal Masjid management that there is no compulsion in religion. But the government should play its part to curb the spreading obscenity and vulgarity around us as well. And I would like to advise my fellow Pakistani Muslims to exercise patience and stay close to religion.

Coming to the June 29 issue, the cover story 'How to be successful' by Arif Iftikhar was just amazing. Everyone should realise that there is definitely some talent in him/her, which Allah has blessed him or her with and one should explore it. If we explore ourselves, we can explore the world.

Labeeb Ur Rehman, Islamabad

Salam Ed,

The article 'Sir and The Satanic Verses' by Ayesha Pervez about Salman Rushdie was a short but precise piece of writing. The whole world may appreciate him and his literary work, but his fame and name is only for a short span of time. The poem 'Pyrrhic Victory' by Saad Javed was a marvellous creation just like all of his other poems.

Now coming to the Jamia Hafsa issue, we gave the world yet another chance to laugh at ourselves. The Muslim force is used against Muslims. Not only the children and women residing in the Jamia Hafsal, but those living in the nearby areas also had to suffer badly and they were restricted to their houses. The question is why did all this happen and who was responsible for it? We all are now hopeless and just praying for the situation to become normal and for a good and prosperous future of Pakistan, for a nation without conflicts and a country without terrorist and extremists.

Clarification

AoA,

No doubt Us is the best thing after a buttered bread. No buttering here, I assure you. I feel really blessed when through all the ups and downs in life I get the pleasure of laying my hands on Us. I actually feel that I have invested my time in a worthy activity. We get a lot of qualitative material to read and a good laugh now and then. The writers of Us are really doing a splendid job. Keep it up guys. You keep us entertained.

The cover story of the June 29 issue by Arif Iftihkar was an effort worth mentioning. Hats off man! He gave some valuable steps we all need to follow. The team of Us should also look into Miss Momal Mushtaq's suggestion about the 'Art Gallery'. I believe the magazine should consider making such an addition but it depends upon what the other readers have to say as well. Please print the posters of Chris Daughrty, Roxen and Linkin Park.

Lastly, I want to ask something. Do the cover stories become your property after being published? I believe stories and poetry do not become your property and can be used as we please later on. Please clarify.

Anything that is published in a newspaper or a magazine cannot be sent to any other publication.  It will be a serious violation of copyrights, in addition to being morally and ethically wrong.

Wake up, government!

AoA Ed,

A number of unpleasant events have ensued in response to the public-hostile policies of the government. This is ruining the country's image throughout the world. And surely such policies trigger demonstrations countrywide, deteriorating law and order situation in the country.

I think it is high time for the government to recognise that force is not the ultimate solution to resolve issues. In order to avoid the country being destabilised, such issues must be resolved through mutual negotiations and democratic procedures. And I must say that Us is doing very well in representing such issues.

Requests...

Dear Ed,

I am an old reader of Us, but this is my first mail to you so please don't disappoint me. I have more then 150 issues of Us! I just want to request you to please print Ali Zafar's interview in 'my teen years' section. Also, add a horoscope page in your magazine. It would make it more popular. Please think about my request.

Zubeida Ali

Hey Ed!

When I started reading Us, I found it very good. Now I regularly read the magazine, especially the letters section and anxiously await Labeeb Ur Rehman's comments. He writes well on all the topics. And his criticism, comments and advices are really good. I want to request that please print the posters of Britney Spears, Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova.

Hi Ed,

I have been reading your magazine for the past eight years, and it actually has improved throughout. Now, I wait for Fridays. The issue June 22, 2007 was superb. Thumbs up to Kanza Tariq for the cover story. I would suggest you to restart the 'tongue 'n' cheek' section because it was fun reading different opinions expressed by people on various topics. Overall, the mag is going cool. Keep up the good work!

Lasanya Mirza, Abbottabad

There were errors!

AoA Editor!

Arees Zafar's 'Trapped' is more an analogy of sin rather than a horror story. His vivid depictions of how sin eats away one's own self, and how one who commits suicide relives his last moments until the Day of Judgement are impressive portrayals. I would like to touch upon one matter, and that is a minor error in the illustration: the spectral wolf was described as dragging itself along, yet in the illustration it was shown as standing upright. In a previous story, the love story written by Sehar Sheikh, the illustration was of a grove of trees with orange-coloured leaves, yet the grove was described in the story as having pine trees. Aren't pine trees evergreen? Yes, colourful trees would lend a good touch to the illustration, but one shouldn't depart from fact just to create a good effect. Minor errors like these do not give a good impression.

Iqra Asad, Lahore

We regret the errors, Iqra.

Change 'the music page', please!

AoA Ed,

The issue of July 06, 2007 was totally awesome. The article 'The lost bird' by Mubeshra was a very touching piece of writing. Also, the 'graffiti' section was fun to read.  There is something I want to say about 'the music page'. Can you please bring some changes in it? It gives so much coverage to the English music and there are hardly any news items about our local music industry. Please print more stuff about our bands. And I beg you to please print a poster of the  Roxen or Call.

P.S. At least I surely do not want a permanent sports page though the 'Art Gallery' sounds cool!

Sarah
