After
launching Still Waters Publishing in Pakistan with a big bang with
their book Revived, that chronicled the lives of women who are intrinsic
to Pakistan's fashion scene, Kiran Aman and Khadija Malik have certainly
not been resting on their laurels. They followed that event up with
launching Skin, a collection of poems by Faraz Maqsood Hamidi and
then went on to launch Raw Life, a coffee table book by graphic designer
Khaula Jamil. Now, they took the big leap and launched all three books
in Dubai at the art and design club Shelter.
Kiran and Khadija want to promote modern Pakistani culture via their
publishing house. They state that they do not want to touch on issues
like terrorism that are so linked to Pakistan that the world seems
to think that that's all that goes down here, which is clearly not
the case. Launching their books here was the first step and taking
them to Dubai the next. But this is not the only reason why these
women are our hotsteppers this week.
They are also looking at making a difference in Pakistan. Revived
is being translated to Urdu and will be launched in paperback form
for young girls who are looking for a direction in modern day Pakistan.
Kiran and Khadija believe that reading about the lives of women who
made it will make a difference to their lives and inspire them to
do the same.
Here's to Kiran Aman and Khadija Malik then, for jazzing up Pakistani
books and for chronicling the much neglected brighter side of the
land we call home. |
