Instep's hotstepper of the week is the talented young cricketer, Umar Gul. This phenomenal bowler has made watching the ICC World T20 series a delight for Pakistani cricket fans: he not only made mincemeat of the New Zealand batting order but also set a world record for the most wickets taken in the World T20 series – five – while only conceding six runs. His reverse swing bowling action – a purely Pakistani innovation that the likes of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis perfected – has only brought more fans of Pakistani cricket into the fold. At the match against Ireland, Umar wreaked havoc again, taking two wickets and making him (by the day of the Ireland match) the highest wicket taker in the tournament so far. Whether Pakistan wins the tournament or not, Umar definitely deserves a standing ovation for having played so brilliantly, considering Pakistan has played very little first-class cricket recently. Kudos to Gul – our hotstepper of the week! |
