If you haven't already heard of Abbas Hasan, chances are you soon will. He is a rising Pakistani pop sensation. Born in Canada and raised in Paris, he currently lives in London. Of Pakistani Origin, he is truly cosmopolitan, churning out some pretty catchy songs in French, Arabic, English and Urdu.

He has a number of hits already and for his new song “Away”, he launched a party in the heart of London, to introduce his new pop video, featuring Pakistan's top actress Humaima Malick. The video is directed by Adnan Qazi and shot in London. He is signed up by Rishi Rich productions and many talented artists; including Rishi Rich rubbed shoulders, at the launch party, as the music blared. The grand finale was the unveiling of the new pop video, showing Humaima Malick, quite different from her role in 'Bol', braving the freezing UK weather, in her raunchy outfits. The on screen chemistry between the two of them is quite convincing and the footage is stylishly shot and well directed by Adnan.

“There is a scene where we are both laughing, but actually, it was because I made her jump, when I touched her with my freezing cold hands”, he laughingly recounts. Humaima was a good sport, flying over to London, especially to shoot the video with him. The song is catchy and its “the most English yet”, Abbas explains.
With hits such as 'Sona' and 'Habibi', Abbas describes his music as pop fusion. It's a mixture of dance, remix, rock ballads, electro and a different, but dynamic mix of flavours. The songs are easy to listen to and very catchy.

Apart from the music, Abbas has taken a step into acting in Bollywood, filming the highly controversial film, 'Mazhavillinattam vare'.  For this role, he learned to speak in Malayalam language, which was completely foreign to him, and usurped the role of Pakistani cricketer, Mohammed Asif, who was originally to play the lead, but was dropped due to match fixing allegations. The release of the film has been further delayed due to the scandal of the Indian cricketer, Sreesanth, and all the roles pertaining to his character have had to be deleted!

“What about a Pakistani film?” I ask him.  Abbas has not been to Pakistan for 8 years, but is looking forward to a trip fairly soon. “I love Pakistan and it was a huge influence on me growing up”. He states that there are “very creative people in Pakistan, whether in fashion, film making or music”.

“There is a real movement in Pakistan in film making at the moment. There is a changing face of film making, which is very inspiring.”

Indeed Pakistani music, it seems, played a significant role on Abbas, growing up. To my surprise he reveals that singers like Abida Parveen, were what he grew up listening to. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and rock music, as well as classical Pakistani music, also inspired him, and to some extent, you can see that Abbas's songs are a melting pot of these childhood influences. He loved visiting Pakistan growing up and is excited at the release of 'Away' in Pakistan.

It is India, however, which is luring him at the current time, as he has been rubbing shoulders with Bollywood 'A' listers. There was an advertising campaign where he starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan, and he has met up with him several times since, including in Vancouver.

“He is a very genuine guy, a really amazing person”, he says of Shah Rukh. Abbas has performed in The Times of India Awards and played at the London premier of Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor's film,  Teri Meri Kahaani. He is being taken seriously by Bollywood, and is no doubt going to be snapped up for more movies.

Yet, Abbas has shown a loyalty and allegiance to Pakistan by having Humaima as his love interest, in his latest release. He is at pains to point out that the rumour mills were wrong in saying that she had replaced Mehreen Syed. He is hoping to again work with a Pakistani actress, this time, Mehreen in his next up and coming venture.

Abbas is young, full of energy and London as a base, suits him. “I love London, it's a great base to travel to Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Canada, where my parents are,  Dubai, India and Pakistan”. He adds that London has a huge international artistic community and he has made a lot of interesting friends, in fashion, films and the arts. He feels London is the heart of the music scene.

Abbas tells me how a day before our interview, he was the showstopper in a Pakistan Fashion Show. In 2010 he was voted The Bachelor of the year by The Asian Woman Magazine and has made it to the top 10 list of most handsome south Asian Male models. So given this accolade I ask him if he is in a serious relationship. He laughs it off, saying he is hard at work and it's difficult to be in a serious relationship as he is travelling all the time.  The ladies may have to wait!

Despite his rising fame and talent, what strikes me most is just how humble and polite he is. Indeed, I had to embarrassingly re -arrange the interview several times, but there was no diva like offence taken and Abbas remained accommodating and utterly polite.

He is looking forward to 'Away' being his first single releasing in Pakistan and wants to thank his Pakistani fans. He is excited to be visiting Pakistan later this summer, when he will be taking part in the Lux Style Awards 2014, so look out for a rising Pakistani super star.
