The
Journey that Life is!
In this world, everyone's
life is characterised by some kind of pattern. But, what is life in the very
first place? For some it is a journey, for some it is monotony, for some it
is hope etcetera. Like all other beings, poets also have their view of life,
which is reflected in their writings. There are countless perspectives of
life that we encounter while reading poetry or any kind of literature. For
example, Robert Frost's idea of life was that of it being a journey:
"And miles to go
before I sleep" (Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening)
And another profounder
example would be his none other than The Road not Taken:
"...I shall be telling
this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages
hence:
Two roads diverged in a
wood, and I,
I took the one less
traveled by,
And that has made all the
difference."
Thus, life is a road that
has to be travelled at any cost. Travelling, in my opinion, suggests activity
in contrast to the idea of being static. And what would life have been, had
there been no vicissitudes! This reminds me of a line by Iqbal, which says:
"...idhar doobay udhar niklay, udhar doobay idhar niklay"

The
Secret
By Muhammad Awais Aftab
Looking
down
On
the mirror surface of the pond
I
see a face
Not
mine
But
hers
And
I wonder
Has
the secret of our love
Leaked
out
To
the water, as well?
Once
Upon Another Dream
Amna
Umar
From
the white mountains, their far off peaks
Your
image, your shadow dawns upon me
Like
the sun attaches in its setting
The
sea, the sky together in the thin horizon
The
silken routes to the forest
The
hour glass in your cottage
Tells
of the minute emotions, maximizing our lives
And
the stars, like arrows
Fire
towards the moon
Their
fierce arrows
Hit
upon the imagination
Of
the cotton balls dispersed
In
the ozone layer;
Let
them rain on the gardens
Where
the humming birds suck the juice
From
the black tulips,
And
sing a serenade in low whispers
Beckoning
us to the very path
Where
we left the flowerbeds
With
shrubs sucking out their nutrition
Let's
save them again
And
plant another flowery tale
Once
upon another dream...
Brittle
Gold
By Saadia Umar Asghar
Those
faces, those lies
Electroplated
with gold
With
smiles thick as honey
But
some one great once told
The
devils within are angels without...
Eternal
Fragrance
By Rija Muzammil
In
the screaming darkness of night
When
the moon shone upon your eyes
In
the silent sound of pouring rain
When
fallen leaves whispered in your ears
In
a careless glimpse upon the past
When
I flashed upon your mind
In
the gentle wind caressing your lips
I
heard you breathe my name...
The
Flower of My Heart
By Saad Javed
(In
memory of my late Naani Maa, who passed away on 19th Feb, 2006)
Though
withered, now
A
rose thou art
How
shall thou not be?
The
flower of my heart
For
cherished thou art
As
the beloved of the
Nightingale,
the gardener,
The
garden
From
the womb of earth,
You
throve
And
shone
And
like a pitcher of fragrance
You
sweetened the garden breeze
Sad
I am;
The
lap of clay
Has
embraced you,
Yet
the soft ripples of
The
bygone days
Rock
my soul in
Gentle
ways
These
eyes are full
And
drops like dew, fall
On
your sepulchre, again
When
I think of your fight
Against
pain, agony and solitude
This
grief may
Exile
one day
But
the love of you,
Never
will
For
thou art,
And
always be
The
flower of my heart...
Some
Where in the Wilderness...
By Dr Amberin Saadat
Somewhere
in the wilderness,
I
lost my soul,
A
twilight enigma,
Day
by day, I endured
Bearing
the pain and toiling it,
I
undauntedly decided,
To
make over my wretched soul,
Searching
for it, where it once belonged to,
Found
trapped in that single moment,
Fault
or Virtue,
I
don't know...
It
refused to listen,
Pledges
and requests,
Tears
and sighs -
All
was implausible,
I
surrendered to its will,
And
came back quiet.
