Court Martial Kareena Kapoor
In this interview, Bollywood's 'it' girl Kareena Kapoor speaks out on her break-up with Shahid Kapoor, her relationship with beau Saif Ali Khan, the success of Jab We Met and more...

By Sonali Jaffar

For someone who's ruled by her heart, it's hard to assume the tag of being the heart breaker. Kareena Kapoor has had to live with that in the recent past and she comes out in defense strongly. But there's always been more to Kareena than Jab We Met and Jab They Split. Kareena had already proven her acting mettle and growth as an actress with her mature performance in Omkara. Post Jab We Met, she's gunning for the No. 1 crown with Rani and Preity easing out of her way. Bebo's also eased into the role of the more seasoned man, Saif's girlfriend, which calls for a certain level of maturity from her. She may have weathered the public storm in her personal life, but we can't resist putting her to trial in this month's court martial.

Your personal life seems to be hogging the headlines but what is happenings on the career front?
Tashan and Golmaal Returns are movies on the anvil. Then around Diwali, I have Main Aur Mrs. Khanna with Salman. After that is Sajid Nadiadwala's Kambakht Ishq with Akshay Kumar and then there is Karan Johar's home production.

Kareena Kapoor today seems to be waving the white flag even before she say hello. Salman Khan has been the first to accept the olive branch, which you have extended.

There was no problem with Salman ever. Salman and I have known each other since Lolo was in movies. I just think it was some idle minds at work. The film we are doing is produced by Sohail so it's his home production. So hope that finally puts an end to that rumour.

Mani Ratnam was supposed to cast you in his next. That project seems to have fizzled out. You don't seen to be pursuing it considering that Aamir Khan who was starring in the film is supposed to have shown interest in renewing the project.

I don't know what exactly happened but they just scrapped that movie.
The next person on your peace endeavour seems to be John Abraham. After the rather uncomplimentary things you said abut him on Karan Johar's show you seem to have called off the war. It is a co-incidence that you are doing Karan Johar's film with him?

I was offered a movie with Ashata Vinayak and they told me they were casting John, and I said I had no issue with it. It is not necessary that everyone I work with is my best friend. Why would I not work with John? The prime consideration is the subject, nothing matters beyond that.

So you are okay with him playing your romantic interest?
See, I'm an actress and he is an actor, we are supposed to work together. We don't have to love each other to bring out the best chemistry.

Surprisingly the same thumb rule does not apply to Shahid as you have not signed any films with him despite the success of Jab We Met.

Shahid and I had great chemistry and the film we do now has to be that fantastic for us to do. Because we have done fantastic films in the past (laughs sarcastically). What happened to the chemistry then? People have forgotten that, which is great for us. Only if the script is great will we work together.

In the middle of this whole peace process that you have embarked on why have you taken on Priyanka and refused to even call her an actress in a recent interview?

Where have I taken on Priyanka? I just said Rani is fantastic, and she is. I love Rani. Secondly, Priyanka is fab. I have never said anything bas about her. It probably came cross in a wrong way and that is not what I said. People should understand that Priyanka and I do not have an issue. Both Rani and Priyanka are friends of mine. Priyanka and I celebrated Diwali together.

Then why did you look through Rani who was shooting with Saif in Bangkok when you had gone to visit him?

That is such nonsense. Rani and I are so friendly, we meet at Karan's house and hang out together. The funniest part is Rani wasn't even in Bangkok when I was there. Saif was shooting with Amisha.
Did you say hello to her at least?

Am I supposed to be handing out on the sets? I'd gone there on a holiday and I also shot a commercial there. But people have decided that I was sitting on Kunal Kohli's sets, doing what, I have no idea. Saif and Amisha weren't even staying in the same hotel, and I didn't go on the sets. So there was no question, of saying hello to her. I got to know from Saif that she was in Bangkok.

Does is make you feel left out when you see practically every other actress in one camp or the other?
Who are these girls doing films with any big banners or a big actor?
Are you a part of Don 2?

Is Don 2 being made? I have no idea. I was in Farhan's house recently; there was no mention of the film. I think Farhan's acting in movies. Besides I was killed in Don, so if Don 2 is made, how can I be a part of it?

Now that you are with Saif, and the way things are between you, do you feel you have to grow up faster, given the age difference between you two? In the past, you have been with guys your age, you think you can deal being with a man who has two kids?

It's too soon yaar, we are still getting to know each other, it's just been 5 months; it's too soon for anything else. Besides that my focus is my work, everything else takes a backseat,
Are you doing Saif's home production Agent Vinod?

Yes. My work is my first priority. I don't have time to breathe. I am shooting films back to back. And I need to give work my undivided attention at the moment because I don't think this time is going to come back.

In the past you'd always placed your personal life over your professional life, thereby, your professional life did take a beating at times. But with Rani and Preity easing out of the industry, there's the No1. actress slot up for grabs. It was there for the taking for you earlier and you let it slip. This time are you going for the kill?

Everyone knows I put my personal life forward. But now I'm not going to do that. I'm a different person today, I am much stronger and my work is my priority. And Saif understands that. And I need my man to understand that. My family and my work are the two most important things is my life and nothing can draw my focus away from them. What is great is Saif understands that.

You had met Saif so many times in the past. Wasn't there any sign of sparks then?
I was with Shahid and he was with Roza when we did Omkara, so no, there was nothing then. I was opposite him in LOC too, so when I look back even I wander. But I guess, it's just the time.
You did get a lot of media flak when your relationship began.

I just don't know why, 'coz some things work and some things don't. I have left everything to destiny. I am committed to Saif and I think that I'm very open about my emotions. If I am going to hide behind closed doors and conduct my relationship, that is not me and I'm not going to change just because it is expected of me as a heroine. I live by my own rules.

You were made out to be the vamp who dumped her boyfriend when he was going through a low. How did you live with that?

Not many people know that Shahid and I are still very friendly. Why is everyone making it out ot be that it's ugly and negative? We have both done this with an understanding of each other. And we don't have to scream from our rooftops saying, 'We are fine'.

Shahid got a lot of sympathy from the media and the masses, which you didn't get. And you didn't seem to care 'coz you weren't bothered, and made those public appearances with Saif.

That's what people should know that I'm a girl of the heart. My decisions will be with my heart. All I know is that Saif is a great guy and I am extremely happy with him. He's really wonderful and supportive towards my work and me. I think I am very lucky. All the other girls must be dying of jealousy, no? Ya… because, he is so cute.

Did the success of your man matter to you at all?
Not at all.
But people did make comparisons at one point in time?
But I don't think there can be any comparisons in love. I don't think like that. People who know me know that yaar.

When you read reports of Shahid going out with Sania Mirza, what was your reactions? Do you feel a pang that he's moved on?

I'm happy if he has moved on. I will always be happy for him in whatever he does. And he says he is happy for me. That's what he tells me all the time.

But there's a tinge of sadness in his interviews. Or haven't you noticed?
We're friends. He understands me and I understand him. That's all that maters to me.
So tomorrow if he discusses his dating problems with you, you wouldn't be awkward about it?
I don't know. That hasn't happened yet, so I don't know. But if he has truly moved on. I'd be really happy.
Do you think it's fair when people tend to blame the person who moves on first for the relationship going wrong?

It did happen. But once again. Saif was very supportive even then. He has been very dignified the way he's handled things. People had dragged him into this whole thing. He has come out of it with his dignity intact and without his support, I don't think I would have done as well too. The time I really needed him, he was there for me. If he wanted he could have just turned his back and said. 'I don't want to be a part of the media mess'. He held my hand with pride and I think that was truly commendable. He's given an interview saying he's truly committed and for our man Saifoo to say that, is quite something. So right now, I think I'm extremely lucky.

Everyone seems to think he's much more besotted by you than you are with him.
Is it true? I don't know (laughs) No. I don't think that's true at all. People are just used to me talking about my relationship all the time. I did that for four and a half years. But if I choose to speak less about it now, that doesn't mean I don't feel as besotted.

How's your on-screen chemistry in Tashan?
I haven't seen the portions we've shot yet, and we're still shooting for it. But it's an interesting film and I'm very excited about it.

Are you going to compartmentalize your personal and professional lives, as in work less with Saif, so there is less pressure on you two?

The chemistry between two people works on screen only if the script is good. Whatever films we choose, we'll be careful about doing them that's for sure.
