Malaterre (Designer) |
"This
week I've been listening to a mish-mash of music, that I've
loved before and hadn't heard for a while so I dragged them
out. The songs that I've been listening to Pink Floyd's
'Breathe' and Bjork's 'Venus as a Boy' as well as Pulp.
I also have a CD of Hard Kaur remixes that I've been playing."
Rediscovering old music is definitely
a joy - something we highly recommend! And Sadaf's discoveries
range ranges from the Icelandic singer Bjork to the Indian
Hard Kaur. Bjork's 'Venus as a Boy' released as the second
single from her 1993 album Debut, while Pink Floyd's 'Breathe'
was off their iconic record The Dark Side of the Moon.

"3
Doors Down, Black Sabbath and Disturbed are the three bands
I've been hearing consistently. Besides these three I'm
listening and working on some of my own songs."
Heralded
by Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath remains one of the most
influential heavy metal bands in the world.
Disturbed
are a heavy rock band with four albums to their name. 3
Doors Down are a progressive rock act with super hit singles
like 'Kryptonite', 'Loser', 'Here Without You' and 'When
I'm Gone'. |

Shiraz Uppal (Musician) |
"I
listen to everything AR Rahman does. I heard the soundtrack
of Delhi 6 and Connections, both of which are fabulous.
I've also been listening to Abba. One of my favourite Abba
tunes is their song 'Chiquitita'. I've also been listening
to Rihanna and Bon Jovi's self-titled debut album."
Shiraz
Uppal and AR Rahman have worked together twice. And Shiraz
remains a Rahman loyalist and for good reason. Delhi 6 did
not live up to expectations but the music certainly did.
Connections is a non-film album by AR Rahman which released
late last year.
Swedish pop act Abba ruled the international music scene
from mid-seventies and right up till early eighties. Recently
Abba songs came back in vogue with the film Mamma Mia!
Rihanna is one of R'n'B's brightest shining stars at the
moment with mammoth hits like 'Umbrella' and 'Disturbia'
to her credit while Bon Jovi, one of rock's biggest bands
in the eighties have ten studio albums to their credit.

Ali Alam (Musician/Author/Astronaut) |
Ali
is listening to: "'Your Love Means Everything To Me'
by Faultline featuring Chris Martin, 'Her Morning Elegance'
by Oren Lavie and the new U2 album No Line on the Horizon."
When prodded by Instep about why he was listening to these
songs: "I don't know why. Because they're good songs.
I'm looking for a simple melody. A song that I can sing
in my own company. That's a U2 song. Which is why they're
the best band in the world."
U2's
No Line On The Horizon may have just released but the iconic
band is already planning to follow it up with an EP this
year, following in Coldplay's footsteps that released their
album Viva La Vida (Or Death and All His Friends) as well
as an EP in 2008. |

"I've been listening to Nitin Sawhney
- I love everything he does! I've been listening to Homeland
and Beyond Skin by Nitin. I've also been listening to a
lot of John Mayer, particularly the song 'Slow Dancing in
a Burning Room'. Also Kaavish, they have a phenomenal album,
particularly 'Gunkali'.
Kaavish's
album seems to be the toast of town. While the album hasn't
been released yet, several musicians have been listening
to it for months now, and as Selina told Instep, "for
some reason its on all of our iPods." We can't wait
to see the response to the album whenever it does get released.
Nitin
Sawhney is a British-Indian musician whose fusion of jazz
with traditional beats has won him fans world over. |

Ehtesham Khan (Azal) Musician

"Locally,
I've been listening to the Mekaal Hasan Band and Rahat Fateh
Ali Khan. Ali Azmat is a favourite. On the international
front, I'm listening to classic '80s rock: White Snake,
Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin. From the newer
acts, Audioslave are good."
Mekaal
Hasan Band with its combination of poetry, jazz and rock
have quite a following in Pakistan. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
released his solo album, Charkha, last year and also sings
for Indian films regularly.
Ali Azmat returned to the spotlight with his second solo
album, Klashinfolk. Like the man, the album is eclectic.
