'Quicksand' Travis

Off Their fourth studio album, 12 Memories, 'Quicksand' sees Travis return to a mature yet recognizable sound after the band took a dark turn towards experimenting. This song is a classic sing-a-long, harmonic number and has a Beatles feel to it. The Scottish lads really have progressed as musicians and one can see it through this album.

Fran Healy's rough-edged, low voice suits the melancholic music extremely well.
And for this album, Travis not only wrote the entire content themselves, and even produced the record themselves.

Musically, Travis is very reminiscent of Brit bands like Keane and Coldplay. The common denominator between these three bands and their music is the use of piano as a dominant instrument in their alternative rock music style. And are accredited for paving path for other Brit bands.

Travis is back in the spotlight with The Boy With No Name that sees them teaming up again with Nigel Godrich, the young gun of music production (Johnny Cash, Linkin Park, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Sir Paul McCartney producer). But for now, download this number.

'There She Goes'
The La's

English rock band, The La's never really gained much attention outside UK. Now that the re-mastered copy is out, it is time to listen (or download) this number once again.

Off their debut album, The La's that released in the early eighties, this song remains their most well-known tune to date.

With a very poppish feel to it, 'There She Goes' is one of those tunes that one instantly falls in love with. A catchy hook, Lee Mavers' singing freely "There she goes/There she goes again/She calls my name/she pulls my train/No one else could heal my pain/And I just can't contain/This feeling that remains", it remains a gem.

That said, 'There She Goes' is not without its share of controversies.

It is a belief that the song is referring to the use of heroin as the words "There she goes again... racing through my brain... pulsing through my vein... no one else can heal my pain" come through. The La's however deny any such meaning.

Over the years, 'There She Goes' has been covered by numerous artists over the years including Sixpence None the Richer, Robbie Williams, The Wombats, The Boo Radleys and The Cranberries.

'The Man Who Would Be King'
The Libertines

Peter Doherty fits the image of a rock star completely... a brilliant singer-songwriter, bent on self destruction, always in reckless behaviour, open for public spectacle. Having supermodel Kate Moss as an ex-girlfriend is just one more reason for the media's growing interest in this man. But before he shot to fame as the front man of Babyshambles, Pete was the front man for another incredible two-album old band, namely The Libertines.

With a flirtatious opening riff and a very non-serious Pete Doherty on the vocals, this is a punk song at its finest. "Don't you think I care?/Well I know you know I know you know I know/And to the man who would be king/I would say only one thing /la la la-la-la-laa la la la-la-la-laa/I lived my dreams today/And I have lived it yesterday" – it is a lovely tune.

Pete is the male counterpart of Amy Winehouse, the jazzy soul singer who is just as brilliant and gutsy as him and sadly, equally self-destructive. As musicians, the two of them have brought British music in the international spotlight.

The Libertines called if off after two fantastic albums because Pete never got his act together. So here's hoping Babyshambles helps him with his act. For his sheer originality and that careless yet lovable rock 'n' roll attitude, give Pete and The Libertines a shot.

'Like a Rolling Stone'
Bob Dylan

Ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine in 2004 as "the greatest song of all times", 'Like a Rolling Stone' is one of Bob Dylan's biggest hits to date. Off the album, Highway 61 Revisited, it is a groundbreaking song in many ways. The 1965 release is a six-minute song, something that was uncommon back in the '60s. Poetic in wordplay as the song goes, "How does it feel/How does it feel/To be on your own/With no direction home/Like a complete unknown/Like a rolling stone?" extremely melodic in composition and a fusion of various style of music with a plethora of
instruments forming the musical structure like a flirtatious organ, dominant drums and eclectic guitars, it remains a classic to date. Even today if the lyrics were about two individuals or world happening in
general but critics of the time state that the album was a statement towards the political scenario of the time when American troops were being sent to Vietnam. Other artistes who have covered this particular single include Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and Neil Young.

'Bent'
Matchbox Twenty

In 1999, lead singer of Matchbox Twenty, Rob Thomas, teamed up with Carlos Santana on the track, Smooth'. The song went onto become a huge hit in and outside the US of A and increased Rob Thomas' profile by leap and bounds.

A year later Rob along with his band Matchbox Twenty returned with their second studio album, Mad Season. 'Bent', the first single off the album was a critical and commercial hit and to date remains one of the bands's most acclaimed song. The video was a spoof on Rob's newly found star status and saw band members assaulting Rob.

Musically, it's a simple prog-rock number that boasts of some slashing guitar riffs from ex-guitarist Adam Gaynor. Written by Rob Thomas, 'Bent' sees Rob penning some introspective words as he says, "If I couldn't sleep could you sleep/Could you paint me better off/Could you sympathize with my needs/I know you think I need a lot/I started out clean but I'm jaded/Just phoning it in/Just breaking the skin/Can you help me I'm bent/I'm so scared that Ill never/Get put back together".

Matchbox Twenty went onto release More Than You Think You Are in 2002 but the album didn't fare well as their last two records after which guitarist Adam Gaynor left the band. Soon Rob Thomas went on a solo path and released Something To Be, which was a huge hit. In October 2007, Matchbox Twenty have returned as a unit with Exile on Mainstream. These guys are fantastic rockers and experiment with each record. For now though, blast 'Bent' on your player. There is other way to hear this fine ditty.

'For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti'
Sufjan Stevens

Sufjan Stevens is a well known American musician from Michigan. He is famous for his unique style of music incorporating various musical instruments together. His music is considered to be lyrically strong and instrumentally sound.

In 2003, Stevens announced a concept, basing albums on each of the 50 states, beginning with Michigan. This song is part of the first album, Michigan.

It starts with the beautiful sound of banjo, creating a mellow mood. The immersed lyrics can be heard of as someone's declaration of love and willingness to do everything and anything he can: "Morning comes in Paradise, morning comes in light. Still I must obey, still I must invite. If there's anything to say, if there's anything to do, if there's any other way, I'll do anything for you".

This song gained much popularity after being played in the background for the hugely successful television series The O.C. For all those who like, slow and instrumental music with great lyrics, download it now.
