The trend so far in
Bollywood is of mindless comedies. This basically means movies that
do not have an intelligent story line and simply bank on masala
elements such as songs and cheap humour that is now overdone in
Hindi cinema.
While Krazzy 4 strays away from such problems and does have a story
to it, it is still nothing too great.
On the plus side, the film does not have a complicated plot and
is unlike other comedies that have come out in the past six months
such as Partner, Welcome and One, Two Three.
The actors are all pretty good but not one of them has enough star
power to sell the film. And that's why Rakesh Roshan, the producer
of the film got Shahrukh Khan and hunky son Hrithik Roshan to do
'item numbers', a trend that is gaining tremendous momentum in mainstream
cinema.
The story is about four men in a mental rehabilitation facility.
Raja (Arshad Warsi) is the angry young man. His blood boils, his
fists clench and he's ready to beat the daylights out of anyone
who upsets him. A cricketer by profession Raja seems the sanest
of all, when he is not angered.
Dr. Mukherjee, (Irrfan Khan) has decided all by himself that he's
the Captain of the team! But his obsession to be in control of a
situation has made him lose control of reality.
Then there is Gangadhar (Rajpal Yadav) who marches to a beat only
he can hear: he's fighting for a cause that's long over… the
independence. But in his mind he's still fighting!
Suresh Menon is Dabboo. He's everybody's pet and however far-gone
the rest may be, when it comes to Dabboo, everybody's protective.
Even if he can hear and understand, Dabboo refuses to speak. And
nobody knows why. He is a character who could've been easily dropped.
Simply put, he is useless, who one doesn't understand and to top
it off, he doesn't communicate.
Together these four men make up Krazzy 4.
Sunali (Juhi Chawla) who is the doctor to all of these loonies wants
them to be a part of the 'normal' society, and as an exercise, takes
them to Mumbai.
Once in Mumbai, things sharply take a drastic turn. The doctor gets
kidnapped and the four patients get dispersed but soon find out
that their doctor is kidnapped. The struggle they go through to
rescue their doctor from the kidnapers is what the movie is about.
The movie is around how things in the society have changed and how
they were supposed to be. It would have been better to release the
movie on the Indian independence since the film is based around
the date that is August 15, India's independence day.
The first hour of the film is boring and it is when one hits the
interval that the real story begins. While the movie is funny, it
isn't one of those comedies that will go down memory lane.
As far as acting goes, Irrfan Khan and Rajpal Yadav were the star
performers.
Irrfan Khan has done some solid work in the last year with The Namesake
and Life in a… Metro – for which he picked up the Filmfare
Trophy for Best Supporting Actor – and in Krazzy 4, he shines.
In fact, he is the one character who manages to make one laugh and
cry.
Rajpal Yadav is a brilliant actor. His role in Krazzy 4 may not
be too meaty but every time he enters the frame, he simply rocks.
Arshad Warsi who has shown his talent in films likes Munnabhai,
Hulchul and Goal doesn't get much scope to act. His role is inadequate
at best and, so is his acting.
Suresh Menon can't match any of the actors. His is the most dull
performance.
Juhi Chawla seems to be added to the cast just to attract viewers;
the movie could have done without her and even Dia Mirza who is
also in a supporting role.
The music of the movie isn't quite as catchy as other Rakesh Roshan
projects. Although all songs are situational and the item numbers
by Shahrukh and Rakhi Sawant – in an attempt to create something
catchy aren't too bad.
Shahrukh's edtion of the title track will make it to the top just
because it has King Khan in it. Whereas Rakhi's item number is on
the lines of 'Beedi', but lacks the finesse and sensuality and borders
on vulgarity.
The remix version of title track got into controversy not because
of its content, but because of four beats in the tune.
Ram Sampat, a jingle composer, accused the Roshans of plagiarism.
However, apparently the jingle Ram Sampat composed was a rip off
too piece from Requiem for a Dream for a Tata Safari ad.
But then again, this song actually makes it into the film only when
the film ends and runs through the end credits with Hrithik Roshan
dancing to it. Only the item songs boast of some serious star power.
But they are not enough to keep one glued to the film throughout.
In a nutshell, Krazzy 4 isn't the kind of cinema that would invite
debates or discussions. Its intention is to make people laugh or
at the very least, chuckle and it manages to do that.
