I Don't Want To Wait'
Paula Cole
Off her second album, The Fire, 'I Don't Want To Wait' remains one
of Paula Cole's most memorable tunes, partly because it was the
lead theme song on hit teenage show, Dawson's Creek.
The melody is soft throughout while Paula's vocals that are at times
mellow and aggressive as she sings, "So open up your morning
light/And say a little prayer for I/
You know that if we are to stay alive/Then see the peace in every
eye/I don't want to wait for our lives to be over/I want to know
right now what will it be."
The arrangement of the song remains simple with minimal instruments.
And that is exactly why it works. It's simplicity is the kind that
instantly strikes one.

The
music video of the song also made it an even bigger hit.
Directee by Mark Seliger and Fred Woodward, the concept was one where
a woman is immortal with various relations with men, all of whom die.
With its controversial nature and being one of Paula's first videos
ever, the song got a lot of attention.

'Chasing
Cars'
Snow Patrol
'Chasing Cars', Snow Patrol's breakthrough American hit, is a beneficiary
of the growing tendency of TV series to extend their branding through
attachment to songs played on the show. Featured on the second season
finale of Grey's Anatomy, 'Chasing Cars' got a boost onto the pop
charts and pop radio. This happy occurrence has introduced a true
gem of a love song to pop audiences.
Lead vocalist Gary Lightbody has the perfect instrument to convey
the power and emotion of his words. He has strong enough vocal chops
to hold his own against the surge of backing guitars, but wisely avoids
vocal histrionics that could break the song's spell. It is no surprise
that Lightbody has said 'Chasing Cars' is "the most pure and
open love song" he has written.
|
 |
|
Its
simple poetry and Lighbody's brilliant vocal performace is what has
caused it to rise above the ordinary.
"Let's waste time Chasing cars /Around our heads/ I need your
grace/ To remind me/ To find my own / If I lay here/ If I just lay
here/ Would you lie with me and just forget the world?"
These are words with a beauty and grace that will draw admirers for
years to come. |
