Watching
Sex and the City or Gossip Girl, one wonders (with a special reference
to Sarah Jessica Parker) 'how the hell do they walk and run around
town in those sky high heels?' And it's not a phenomenon restricted
to television or films. Traveling to any of the world's fashionable
districts - Paris, Tokyo, New York or London amongst the many others
- one will be exposed to women walking on stilts! The obsession
with wearing heels is so high that flat shoes are an absolute fashion
faux pas, unless they make a certain one time statement (and it
should never be repeated). To many women, wearing flats to a formal
evening out is as bad as wearing denim to the Oscars!
Here in Pakistan, we're falling into the flat-shoe fetish a bit
too easily. True the roads and pavements make wearing high heel
shoes a bit of a health hazard, but for times when you're not strolling
down the streets, it is time to take to the heels… happily.
Heels are back and how. Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos will always
be classical stiletto A-listers but now on board are super strange
additions by just about any designer you can think of (just looking
at Marc Jacob's backward heels could give you a back ache!). A certain
pair of Chanel lightbulb heels actually light up as you walk.
Of course, many of these brands are not available in Pakistan in
which case one will head out to the nearest outlet of Charles and
Keith for maximum satisfaction. Despite the lack of anything terribly
exciting this season, one will have access to wedges, platforms,
block heels, stilettos as well as a huge variety of kitten heels.
And the best thing is that the shoes are comfortable and do not
leave your heels in distress. Other stores to visit would be Lewre
from Malaysia or Men's Store or Be Smart (in Lahore) when you are
willing to spend a king's ransom on a pair. And women who are still
thinking twice about whether or not to brave the height can refer
to Frieha Altaf and Aaminah Haq, two women who are seldom seen without
the extra mileage! Sometime it's not at all about comfort and just
purely about style.
