Summer is beating down mercilessly and the situation up North is heating up. The one thing guaranteed to pick us up at times like these is music. Songs soothe the senses, becoming even more important now - for some that is. Instep takes a look at the playlists celebrities chose and discovers two who aren't listening to anything at all...

Amir Adnan
Designer

"I'm listening to what my children are listening to and the song for them these days is 'Poker Face'. I am listening to a whole lot of Rihanna and Akon. But my favorite these days would have to be 'Poker Face'. My children are going to be very happy if they hear me saying this as they think I'm very old fashioned! These are the songs I get to hear these days because they listen to them all the time."

Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' and 'Just Dance' (nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Dance Record) are burning up the charts and so is her debut album The Fame, with 'Poker Face' reaching number one in twenty countries. The 'Lonely' hit-maker Akon and the hip-hop and RnB diva Rihanna are two singers making it big with every single they release. They these, Akon's 'I Wanna Make Love' has made its way up the Billboard Hot 100 charts whereas Rihanna has been busy with tours and concerts.

"At the rate our country is going and the circumstances we all live in these days, I prefer to stay far away from music. I have not been indulging in any song at all and my sons have not been rehearsing or listening to music either. The situation in our country seems to be going from bad to worse and hence, it is not fun listening to music. At a time like this, I do not even feel like listening to songs and this is how it is going to be till things get better and so, no song for me till something out of the ordinary happens for Pakistan."

Bilal Masood
Musician

"I have a major selection on my iPod, out of which I have been listening to a lot of Coldplay and Keane. I am also listening to a few songs by The Killers. But there is nothing in specific- I have made a random selection and there is a huge list of songs I have been listening to.
'Bend and Break' by Keane and 'The Scientist' by Coldplay could be called two favorites. I have a separate playlist for local music, which has music by Junoon for their first two albums, Vital Signs and Nazia and Zoheb Hassan. I have another playlist with old Indian classical music."

Coldplay recently released a free album online, the reason why their website has been temporarily paralyzed by flooded fans who are picking up the free album from the address. Keane, an award winning Brit piano rock band, have many hits in their stride, including 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore', 'Crystal Ball', 'Everybody's Changing', Perfect Symmetry' and ''Call Me When You Like'. The Killers could be considered a part of the post-punk revival movement and their debut album Hot Fuss brought them international success. Vital Signs, Junoon and Nazia and Zoheb Hasan are the iconic Pakistani bands that have their music (from the nineties) playing on the radio and television to date.

"These days, I'm listening to the old music from the nineties. I'm listening to all the hits by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and 'Sanu Ek Pal Chain Na Aye' is one of the many I like. I'm also listening to Pink Floyd and Michael Jackson. All the old school hits by Michael Jackson are a part of the nineties music I am listening to. Then there is Pakistani music- I love all Pakistani music."

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is one prominent legend all music lovers adore to date, so much so that teenagers have requested for his slow melodies on the radio request shows a number of times. The

'Thriller' hit-maker Michael Jackson is self-explanatory and so is the prolific Pink Floyd, the English rock band that made wonders through albums like The Wall, Wish You Were Here and Animals among many others.

Mehreen Jabbar
Director

"I'm listening to the voices of my actors! We've been rehearsing for a while and I have had no chance to listen to anything else, let alone music. I have not heard music in the past two weeks because I have been busy with my actors. They are all I have been hearing!"
