Classics special

Don't you think it's time to kick off your shoes, sit on the couch and remember those good old times? Wouldn't it be a kick to slop around with some of the famous old school tunes, which you haven't heard since you're too busy listening to what they call "new music"? Oh what a pleasure it would be to dunk your feet in water, sip onto coffee and listen to some of the best tunes ever produced! And this isn't impossible, all you have to do is get downloading, and the songs will do the rest!

'Miss American Pie'
– Don McLean

No, not Madonna! It's Don McLean we're talking about, Madonna's 'Miss American Pie' is just an adaptation, and the real stuff is Don McLean's original tune.

In this song, Don McLean says his last bye to Miss American Pie and the tune goes like "And the music died, bye bye Miss American Pie." Don McLean dated a Miss America candidate during a pageant and is said to have written this song right after they broke up.

'Miss American Pie' kicks off with Don McLean's voice, slowly telling the listener about the death of a bride, which took place "a long long time ago", saying the music died with her. The track then picks pace and the
piano rings consistently, till the end of the song. The music guy, and so he calls himself in the song, sings about the lovely 'Miss American Pie', who would dance in the arms of her lover bare feet. He sings about how spontaneous she is, as she dances away in the gym and has lovers around her.

"Can music change the mortal soul?" Miss American Pie thought so; she believed in the "book of love" and would laugh out loud while kicking off her shoes while dancing. Miss American Pie is a fun song about the fun Miss American Pie, who tragically dies and is remembered for the way she was. Her "death" might be pointing out to the break-up. It's more like a song that could be sung on the stage of a Broadway musical, and so it seems like it. The lyrics are catchy, serious and intelligent and put together in a fun way. The Internet clearly suggests the song can be perceived in many ways. One-liners like "fire is the devils only friend" and "no angel born in hell could bring that sin to spell" rotate in the head and so does the chorus, long after the song is over.

'Wind of Change'
– The Scorpions

"Don't give up"- the first three words 'Wind of Change' define the whole song, but what's appealing is how the song starts; the flute plays slowly and it's depressing, slow, static yet calm and peaceful at the same time. 'Wind Of Change' makes you want to sleep but stay up, cry but smile and wince but freeze! That's the kind of effect the Scorpions have on the listener, who kick off the song by asking the viewer to listen to the wind of change on a summer night.

The lyrics of this song point to the political changes in

Europe, increasing freedom and the end of cold war. 'Wind Of Change' is a song about the glorious night, when the "children of tomorrow" would get together."On the glory night, the children of tomorrow share their dreams in the wind of change." The song points out to freedom and peace of mind, yet it has such a haunting feel that the listener can't really make out whether the wind of change would bring about onslaught and destruction or a better tomorrow. The Scorpions analyze the change of time and how the wind swirls to what the world would have to offer in the near future. The song has negative and positive connotations and hypnotizes the listener, bringing one down to a daze. 'Wind Of Change' has positive lyrics like distant memories are buried in the past but don't give up, listen to the 'Wind Of Change' and then moves on to the negative side, with lyrics like "The wind of change blows straight into that phase of time, like the storm that we're in." Be it negative or positive, 'Wind Of Change' is a cult classic and dies off with the same haunting rhythm of the flute that was played when the music kicked in.

Miss Sarajevo
– U2

A soundtrack of the documentary Miss Sarajevo, this song might not have reached the first position in the Billboards but is a must listen, especially for those who pay much more attention to lyrics than the music.

Being played about eighty seven times live, Miss Sarajevo is about the pageant beauty queen Miss Sarajevo. "Here she comes, beauty plays the crown, here she comes, surreal in her crown"; the chorus showcases the life of a girl willing to achieve what she has longed for, and the message put forward is there is no specific "time" to achieve what you look for.

Luciano Pavarotti does an opera solo halfway through the song. 'Miss Sarajevo' is mellow and haunts the listener, forcing one to think, ponder and find answers to questions that can possibly never be answered.
This song makes one want to find answers to the questions that are within each and every one of us.

The lyrics are meaningful yet scary, when you think about them. "Is there a time for keeping distance, a time to turn your eyes away" to whether there's a specific time to dab lipstick, a time to turn the Mecca or a time to walk for cover; Bono asks questions in a subtle yet hard hitting tone, which might even scare you! 'Miss Sarajevo' should be number one on your list of classics.

99 Red Balloons'
– Nena

"You and I in a little toy shop, I'll buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got, set them free at the break of dawn, till one by one they were gone." '99 Red Balloons' has a message attached to it; the singer tells us that life passes by, just like the ninety-nine balloons she sings of.

The balloons are set free at the break of dawn and make their way past the streets, the troops and the president. They create chaos and confusion of the political kind and the song then dies off, with the singer going crazy with the vocals, signifying the chaos caused by paranoid way in which an act of zaniness is perceived. It is a satirical poke at the uncertainty in Cold War Europe.

Peaking on second place on the American Hot 100, '99 Red Balloons' is fast paced and fun, wanting to make one want to stand up and clap. The beat becomes faster and faster and goes slow in the midway, picks up pace and slows down towards the end.

The European Nena hasn't had any other hit outside Continental Europe, and therefore, '99 Red Balloons' is considered a one hit wonder in both the US and UK. But a classic it is and should make it to your downloads list.
