Ground Reality

Two's company,

three's a crowd!

By Nabeel Naqvi

Mistakes usually teach us lessons that help us to be more careful and wiser next time. However, there are some people who just never learn from their mistakes. And it seems that the PCB is full of such people. Or maybe the PCB is unaware of some basic rules of management. Some renowned writers, such as Henry Fayol, have emphasised on the unity of command as the key component of good management.

Now, unity of command is a principle of management which holds that a person working in a team or group should be answerable to one person only. There are various advantages of such a setup. The vision is clear, the goals are precisely set up and a person works with more concentration. There is no added pressure on an individual. Extra pressure can surely result in better output in some cases, you might say, however, most of the time added pressure can force a person to collapse.

Now this situation clearly relates to the present scenario of Pakistan cricket. Never before in the history of cricket has a team had three captains at a time. But they say, there is always a first time for everything. This, by the way, is not a criticism on Pakistan team or its players, but it is directed towards the people behind the scene -- those who run the affairs of the team.

Having two captains -- Afridi (T20s) and Younus (ODIs) -- was justified as Younus had retired from the shortest version of the game few months ago. But, now replacing Younus with Yousuf for Tests' captaincy is quiet baffling. Younus Khan says he has opted out as his form is not satisfactory in Test cricket. However, stats clearly indicate that if form was the reason why Younus should leave captaincy, then he had rather left ODIs because his personal form is not good in ODIs either.

Shahid Afridi is leading the team with supreme confidence in T20s, but since he is not a part of the Test team, he could definitely not be considered to captain the team in that format, otherwise he has the kind of character that is suitable for a leader.

Anyway, my point here is that Younus should not have been removed from his post as the Test captain on the basis that his personal form is not good as his ability to lead the team is better than Yousuf's at least.

The reason why I feel that Yousuf couldn't lead the side as effectively is the fact that his decision making is not really good. The guy is involved in more run outs than any other player in the world. And if that is not all, his involvement in ICL (Indian Cricket League) and then coming back to the national team clearly shows that the best Test player in the world is not as good when it comes to decision making which is an integral part of a leader's portfolio.

Moreover, the players will now have to work under three different persons having totally different attitudes and ways of thinking. This will only create confusion.

Although a true fan of team Pakistan would pray for the success of all three captains, ground realities say that such systems are hard to implement and they seldom succeed.
