Modernism vs.

Extremsm –

The end result

By Awais Imran

Blasts, blasts and some more blasts. Shehzad Roy was right in saying: Pakistan waakaee ek naazuk morr say guzarr rahaa hai. We're at the point where nobody knows where the next bomb will explode. Everyone is a target.

Terrorists attacks were previously limited to government offices only, but now, the terrorists (be they the Taliban, America or RAW) are targeting students -- the talib-e-ilm.

I don't remember Prophet Muhammad (SAW) or Allah stating or even so much as hinting to harm any innocent person let alone the students!

What kind of dumb idiots are exploding these bombs!?

In this article I won't give reasons as to what the terrorists are doing, what went wrong and where. Instead, I'll tell you something else: the end result. Which is something rather interesting.

Read on.

The formula for Human History:

Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis

According to G.W. Hegel, a German philosopher, there are three stages of development with regard to human history: the Thesis, an intellectual proposition or idea; the Antithesis, negation of the thesis or a similar reaction to it and the Synthesis, the union of the common good points of both the Thesis and the Antithesis. This, my friends, is how history unfolds.

A war of ideas

Today, Pakistan is facing a war of ideas. This is the war of the moderns against the conservatives, of one extreme against the other extreme, of ignorance against equal and opposite amounts of ignorance. And in some way, it is the mil-milaaap of two polar opposite schools of thought. As it is, both sides are wrong in one way or the other.

In this war of the moderns against the extremists, it is the moderate group of people that gets harmed the most. By moderate people, I mean you and me. Us. People who follow the middle path…

Things will probably get worse before they get any better. I mean, we've had several bomb blasts in the last fewdays! The blast in Peshawar on the 17th of October was allegedly done by a female; a first! And also, during the last six years a total of 22,110 people were killed in terrorist attacks in Pakistan. What Baba said!

This is what my Baba says when asked about what would eventually happen to Pakistan and these horrible horrible bomb blasts.

"Beta, there is no doubt that Pakistan is in a bad shape. But the fact is, ab awaam uth gayee hain. They have realised that what the Taliban are doing is COMPLETELY wrong. It is only a matter of time before we all stand up together: the people, our media, our military and the government to fight as one against the menace that is the Taliban."

Well said.

Synthesis, here we come!

So we are just at the thesis-antithesis stage. The sad fact is, it will probably take dozens upon dozens of sad incidents, like the IIUI blast, before we even begin to touch the synthesis stage. But yes, what keeps my hopes up is the truth that our military forces are fighting day and night to eliminate the terrorists from our country and the whole nation is with them. We are slowly and steadily reaching the synthesis stage…

So what do you do under these circumstances? Follow three words: Unity, Faith and Discipline. Be united. Have faith in Allah. Be disciplined. Bas.

"If you change your past and work together in a spirit that everyone of you, no matter to what community he belongs, no matter what relations he had with you in the past, no matter what is his colour, caste or creed, is first, second and last a citizen of this State with equal rights, privileges, and obligations, there will be no end to the progress you will make."
