Heading south for winter
Hailing originally from Peshawer, Sarah Gandapur will be opening her flagship store in Lahore soon. She claims prêt a porter is her forte and she's ready to show the world how good she is at it…

By Zareen Rahman

Sarah Gandapaur has been working as a fashion designer for the past four years, but upon speaking with her, she states: "Actually I was a student when I did my first shoot with Ather Shehzad. The model that we used was Reema and it appeared in Instep! The shoot was the first of its kind as it was very Victorian-inspired and after it came into print, I received a lot of positive feedback about it."

And after which Sarah worked with Maliha Naipaul and a majority of the country's leading models. "My work's been known for western wear and my western bridals," Sarah states enthusiastically, "and after the Reema shoot, I did one with Iraj."

So where did she get her training in fashion design from? "Well, actually I'm from Peshawar and did two years of fashion design at BETS, and the next two years at PSFD."

Considering Sarah hails from Peshawar, was her family supportive of her venturing out into the field of fashion? "My father's a high court justice, and everyone else in my family is either in politics or in the bureaucracy so in the beginning they were all like: 'yeh tum kya daarzi ban gai ho?' But later on with time, when they saw my determination and work output, they became extremely supportive of my chosen career path."

Planning to open up a shop in Defense, Lahore, very soon, Sarah is also hoping to negotiate her way into Labels in Karachi. However, right now she seems to be pretty keyed up and excited about her first outlet. These days, Sarah looks after her boutique in Peshawar, has a solid clientele in Islamabad, and works from her in-house studio in Lahore.

"I have three lines basically," she says. "One is prêt, the other couture and the third, bridals. You know when I started out, no one was doing prêt. In fact when I came out with my first prêt line, it was only then that designers started catching on to the significance of prêt and soon after Ammar Belal came out with his prêt line."

So does Sarah have any projects in the pipeline? "Yes I'm currently heading my own magazine as its Fashion and Art Director, and recently represented the magazine in Malaysia."

"My style philosophy really is all about experimentation," she adds. "I place a lot of emphasis on my work's fit, cut and style. I work with a lot of printed cotton that I get from Peshawar and hardly use any embellishments on my outfits. I like keeping it clean, sophisticated and simple."

Sarah Gandapur may not have made it as big as Ammar Belal despite designing prêt before him but she certainly does seem to be on the right path towards recognition. It's only a matter of time before her flagship store opens in Lahore and she proves how good she really is!
