MySpace
Music special
If there's one website, where some of the best rock music can be found,
it's MySpace. These songs may not always make the cut for Billboard
charts or even have videos that run consistently on musical channels,
but they make for incredible music. Instep takes a look at some rock
tunes that have found massive followings across the globe, thanks
to MySpace! |

'Believe'
- The Bravery
'Believe' by The Bravery is a mesh of indie rock and electronica.
Drawing inspiration from The Killers and Duran Duran, 'Believe'
is definitely a brash rock number but with lyrics that take
a stab at disturbing surroundings, hopelessness and general
melancholia, it is fabulous number.
"The faces all around me they don't smile they just crack/Waiting
for our ship to come but our ships not coming back/We do our
time like pennies in a jar/What are |

we saving for" sings front man and songwriter Sam Endicott and
he does a fabulous job, emoting the words. |
| |
| Released
in April 2008, the single has escalated to Internet success thanks
to their constantly evolving MySpace page. The Bravery, were one of
the first bands to launch on MySpace and it has worked out well for
them. This tune is currently available on their MySpace page for streaming
and can also be downloaded. |

Silver
Lining' - Rilo Kiley
Some compare them to Fleetwood Mac or to Sarah Mclachlan. In
reality, these artists may be the influences but Rilo Kiley
is very much a band with its own sound.
Off their second album, Under the Blacklight, which released
in April 2007, Rilo Kiley took another leap of fate and crossed
genres, dabbling in pop, blues and hardcore rock.
'Silver Lining' is their biggest hit from the new record and
for all the right songs. Playful and bouncy, with a recurring
riff that just adds so much more dimension to the song, it's
Rilo Kiley at its finest.
"And I'm not going back/Into rags or in the hole/And our
bruises are coming/But we will never fold/And I was your silver
lining/As the story goes/I was your silver lining/But now I'm
gold" as Jenny Lewis sings, one can't help but sing along.
That sing-along factor and air of subtle celebration makes it
all the more addictive. |

'Fix It' - Ryan
Adams and The Cardinals
Ryan Adams is a veteran in the music business but it is his team
up with The Cardinals that has thrown him in the indie rock spotlight.
The man who has done everything from punk to alternative rock, bluesy
ballads is back and he has never been more restrained than on this
song, which works brilliantly.
"How easy was it for you making those plans you made/Before
I became someone for you you know to try to dislocate/But, I know
it's not a game/But if feels like losing when someone you love gets
up and walks away/I'd fix it/I'd fix it if I could/And I'd always
win" sings Ryan but the music is so much more exciting. Well-crafted
and effortless, it is one of the catchiest tunes. The bass guitar
is the real backbone of the song, while the riffs are cocky but
not too outlandish which makes all the difference. This is Ryan
Adams at his best.

'When
Did Your Heart Go Missin' - Rooney
Rooney shot to popularity with their appearance on the hit TV
show The OC and that too without even a record label deal.
Reminiscent of bands like The Beatles, Panic! At
the Disco and The Kills, the boys made it big with this tune
when it first released officially on their MySpace page,
Captivating hooks, crazy drumming and funky rock sound make
'When Did Your Heart Go Missing' all the more appealing.

"Love don't come so easily/This doesn't have to end in tragedy/I
have you and you have me/We're one and a million why can't you see/I'm
waitin', waitin' for nothing/You're leavin', leavin' me hanging/When
did your heart go missing?" sings Robert Coppola flirtatiously
giving the song a fun-funk element.
Robert Coppola, has also starred in some films - Princess Diaries
and The Virgin Suicides - which has helped consolidate the band's
star power amongst fans further. |
