Zakir Hussain has passed away at the age of 73 in San Francisco, leaving the music world mourning.
The legendary tabla maestro was hospitalized for heart-related problems and had been in the ICU for the past week.
Earlier today, a close pal and fellow musician, flutist Rakesh Chaurasia, confirmed the news of his hospitalization to PTI.
"He has been admitted to a hospital in San Francisco for a heart-related problem for the last week. He is unwell and admitted to the ICU right now. We all are worried about the situation," he told the outlet on morning of December 15.
Hussain was not only an exceptional tabla player but also a composer, percussionist, music producer, and a film actor.
During his decades long career, Hussain won numerous international awards, including several Grammys.
In 2009, the legend won the prestigious award in the Contemporary World Music Album category for his collaborative album Global Drum Project at the 51st Grammy.
Meanwhile, on February 4, 2024, Hussain received three awards at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.
This is not all, Hussain was also honored with the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India in 2023, which is one of the country's highest civilian awards.
Zakir Hussain has also appeared in Dev Patel's 2024’s action thriller film, Monkey Man, as a tabla maestro.
