Following President Trump's executive order, Google Maps in the US has labelled Lake Ontario as "Lake America".
Google Maps makes changes according to the government
On Saturday, August 29, Google said that it had changed the maps in accordance with updates from the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) and updated Google Maps "to reflect name changes in official government sources".
Users in the US will see the name change as per the update; however, users in Canada and other countries will see Lake Ontario.
Google has taken a similar stance before when it changed the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" following a separate Trump executive order. Mexico threatened to sue over the change.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Apple Maps in the US still says Lake Ontario.
Trump signed the executive order on August 27, with Ontario Premiere Doug Ford comparing the move to SNL skit.
Canadian's official reacts to name change
During his appearance on ABC's This Week on Sunday, Ford noted, "No one's going to call it Lake of America. It's been Lake Ontario for hundreds of years. It's going to continue being Lake Ontario. It's just so disappointing."
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also denounced the executive order, citing the Wendat, an Indigenous people of North America, as the source of the original name.
Name change amid trade war
Trump gave the order for the renaming days after Canadian negotiators walked away from trade negotiations with the US after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney deemed the US' demands "unfair".
As a result, US tariffs targeting an estimated $28 billion in Canadian goods went into effect, prompting Canada to announce their own 50% retaliatory tariffs against US steel, dairy, electronics and other goods last week.
