A residential building in the Indian capital Delhi has collapsed with dozens of students feared trapped under the debris.
It was reported that at least three people were killed, two were in critical condition after the building, accommodating students, collapsed.
Around 50 people were inside the five-storey building in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of south-west Delhi when it came down around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 6.
What happened to the building in Delhi?
A local Rajen Chhetri, who works with the Delhi Police, said the building had around 15 rooms, with two to three students sharing each, and repair or construction work was underway in the basement of the building, Hostel Daze, which is around a short distance from the Delhi University campus.
"Most of the students staying here are from Keralam, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and study mainly at Motilal Nehru College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm College and Sri Venkateswara College. They were paying around Rs 12,000 per bed," Chhetri said.
"I have been living here for the last 20 years. Some construction work was going on in the basement, where water had started accumulating. The foundation was also extremely weak," he said.
Police said a PCR call was received at South Campus police station at 1:34 p.m., following which eight fire tenders and multiple rescue teams were rushed to the spot.
With no immediate arrangements, residents began lifting heavy concrete slabs and clearing debris themselves in search of those trapped, he claimed.
A cry for help
The rescue operation took on greater urgency as reports emerged of students calling from beneath the debris.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Anil Sharma, who reached the site, said that many people are still trapped.
"We are even getting calls from those who are trapped inside. Teams are continuously in touch with those who are trapped inside; we pray to god that all people are safe," he said.
