Former UK Prime Minister Baris Johnson has taken a jab at Russian President Vladimir Putin after a Russian drone struck a train travelling along a railway line in Ukraine, only a minute behind the train carrying Johnson.
Johnson was returning from a security conference in Kyiv when he was alerted at nearly 5am on Sunday and told to prepare for a potential evacuation.
The incident happened in Volyn, near Ukraine’s border with Poland, as a passenger train behind Johnson’s was targeted.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Johnson called the attack as a “random and senseless” strike against Ukrainians, stating like attacks were occurring even on civilian railway networks.
Moreover, he called for stronger air defences for Ukraine and urged Britain to take the lead in using frozen Russian assets to support Kyiv.
Johnson claimed that over €140 billion was held in a Belgian bank account, along with around £10 billion in London.
Johnson said Ukraine would ultimately win the war and argued that offering the country with greater military support could help in bringing peace and mark an end to the ongoing war.
The former prime minister was not evacuated or delayed by the attack, while passengers on the targeted train were immediately escorted off.
Ukrainian Railways, known as Ukrzaliznytsia, stated no one was injured in the strike on the locomotive.
The incident was among several attacks reported near the Ukrainian-Polish border. Polish officials stated a Russian drone struck near Yahodyn, less than a mile from the Polish border.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attacks, calling them as “barbaric strikes” and warning that Russian aggression was reaching the borders of the European Union and NATO.
