Pope Leo XIV is recovering smoothly at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after undergoing a planned thoracic procedure on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
The Holy See Press Office confirmed that surgical teams successfully removed the lower lobe of the 71-year-old pontiff’s right lung in a three-hour operation that encountered no complications.
Diagnosis and medical details
An intraoperative tissue examination confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, a form of non-small cell lung cancer.
Doctors had initially spotted a small pulmonary nodule during a routine medical checkup and recommended immediate intervention while the condition remained at an early stage. Lead thoracic surgeon Professor Stefano Margaritora led the procedure alongside an expert surgical and anesthesia team.
Recovery and hospital stay
Following the operation, Pope Leo awoke normally from anesthesia and was transferred back to his tenth-floor medical suite. Medical staff noted that he is resting comfortably and breathing on his own.
The Vatican expects the pontiff to remain hospitalized for approximately one week to ensure a smooth recovery.
Official Vatican response
All official papal audiences have been suspended through October 20. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni expressed gratitude toward the medical specialists and assured Catholics worldwide that the Holy Father remains in high spirits.
Well-wishes and prayers continue to pour into St. Peter’s Square from leaders globally.
