King Charles will be sending a letter of well-wishes to Pope Leo following the pontiff's lung cancer diagnosis.
The Pontiff underwent a surgery to remove a lung nodule this week, which went successfully; however, tests confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma.
Charles had previously been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in 2024, with Princess Catherine's own diagnosis coming just a few weeks later.
It is unknown what the King will write in the letter. The Vatican, in a statement, said, "The operation was successful, and there were no complications."
Pope Leo's post-surgery condition
According to the Vatican and physicians, the surgery lasted only 90 minutes and the Pope is expected to remain at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome for a week.
Professor Stefano Margaritora and Dr Luigi Carbone spoke of the Pope's condition, stating, "To ensure a radical resection, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique."
During the operation, tissue examination confirmed the diagnosis, with the Vatican adding that it was "suspected from tests conducted beforehand".
The Vatican has cancelled all of Leo's audiences until October 20.
Speaking previously of his own cancer, the King announced that his treatment will be cut down in 2026, though he is not yet considered in remission.
King Charles and Pope Leo's historic meeting
King Charles and Queen Camilla held a private meeting with Pope Leo at the Apostolic Palace last October during their rescheduled state visit to Vatican City.
The meeting was historic, as Charles became the first British monarch to pray with a pope publicly since 1534, when King Henry VIII split with the church.
