The United Kingdom is gearing up to welcome a second storm this weekend, with Storm Boelo likely to be accompanied by winds exceeding 80mph, heavy rainfall and widespread travel disruption across northern regions.

What storm is happening right now?

The second named storm of the season follows Storm Austen, which hit south-west England on Friday, leaving thousands of homes without electricity.

The UK Met Office has issued amber weather warnings, its second-highest level of alert, for Scotland and northern England, extending south to Carlisle, from 9pm Saturday to 9pm Sunday.

Another amber warning covers north-eastern Northern Ireland from Saturday evening until Sunday morning.

Forecasters have issued a warning of potentially fatal conditions caused by flying debris and powerful waves.

Residents have been strongly advised to remain indoors as much as possible during the storm.

Yellow weather warnings for strong winds and heavy rain will cover northern parts of the UK, while additional rainfall alerts are in place for Wales and parts of western and southern England.

Storm likely to disrupt transport services across area

Transport services are likely to experience disruption due to aggravating weather conditions.

TransPennine Express has advised passengers to avoid non-essential train journeys over the weekend, while Avanti West Coast has urged travellers not to travel north of Preston on Sunday.

Storm Austen left approximately 31,000 homes without electricity at its peak on Friday.

Over 3,700 properties remained without power on Saturday morning, as per National Grid data.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said Storm Boelo would bring widespread rain and especially strong gusts across Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland.

Winds are likely to peak on Saturday evening, with unsettled weather continuing in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland overnight.
