The team of scientists have discovered a new all-in-one vaccination for COVID that is effective against all variants of the virus.
According to The Guardian, the research published in ‘Nature Nanotechnology’ discovered a new approach to vaccine development called ‘proactive vaccinology.’
In this approach, the scientists will build a vaccine before the disease-causing pathogen even emerges.
The first author of the report and a graduate researcher from the University of Cambridge, Rory Hills, said, “We’ve shown that a relatively simple vaccine can still provide a scattershot response across a range of different viruses. It takes us one step forward towards our goal of creating vaccines before a pandemic has even started.”
The study test done on mice showed that the vaccine encourages a broad immune response to coronavirus, including Sars-Cov-1 that caused COVID-19 breakout.
Prof Mark Howarth, the senior author of the study, noted, “Scientists did a great job in quickly producing an extremely effective Covid vaccine during the last pandemic, but the world still had a massive crisis with a huge number of deaths.”
He further suggested, “We need to work out how we can do even better than that in the future, and a powerful component of that is starting to build the vaccines in advance.”
The research is a collaboration between the universities of Cambridge and Oxford and the California Institute of Technology.
