Anya Taylor Joy has revealed that she often requested directors to modify crying scenes for her character when she felt they were more accurately driven by anger and frustration.

While conversing with British GQ, The Queen’s Gambit actress shared that she has frequently advocated for her characters to convey anger in front of the camera.

“I’ve developed a bit of a reputation for fighting for feminine rage, which is a strange thing, because I’m not promoting violence – but I am promoting women being seen as people,” Taylor-Joy said.

She added, “We have reactions that are not always dainty or un-messy.”

The Spill starlet clashed with her character's intense emotions in her first major acting role in Robert Eggers' film The Witch.

“Eventually I said, ‘She’s angry; she’s fucking pissed. She’s been blamed time and time again, and she’s not doing anything. We have to stop with the crying,’” Taylor-Joy recalled.

She noted further, “For all my championing of female rage, I’ve never been an angry person.”

The Menuactress added, “For a long time the only time I ever got angry was on other people’s behalves. I’ve always internalized this thing of ‘I’ve done something wrong. If you treat me badly, it’s because I am the problem.’”

To note, Furiosa will release in theaters nationwide on May 24, 2024 from Warner Bros.
