Hot
on the heels of Wills India Fashion Week, Lakme Fashion Week may not
have had the design stars that India Fashion Week did, but it definitely
had exciting talent on offer. Mumbai It Girl Nandita Mahtani showed
her collection and designer Neeta Lulla famous for making costumes
for Devdas made her debut there. Sushmita Sen walked the ramp wth
her daughter and Karan Johar made a guest appearance for a friend.
But more than the obvious stunts geared towards garnering headlines,
it was the presence of FCUK (French Connection UK) and Italian designer
Giovani Cavagna on the ramp that spoke of Lakme's success loud and
clear. India doesn't just sell clothes, they are a huge consumer market
too. This exchange of fashion is what Lakme Fashion Week believes,
unlike Wills India Fashion Week that has resolutely kept itself restricted
to India only. |

Bollywood
favourite Neeta Lulla, who is also designing Aishwarya's trousseau
used the catwalk to shine a light on 'foeticide' - the practice
of aborting unborn daughters, which is still believed to be widespread
in rural India. The designer's collection blended East and West
effortlessly. The jewel tones of India combined with corsetry to
emphasise the female, mother figure. The finale was a show stopper.
Sushmita Sen walked the ramp with her adopted daughter, Renee highlighting
the fact that women make the world more beautiful.

Mumbai
It girl Nandita Mahtani who runs a label called Ananya put up a tantalizing
show. The hemlines were were short and sassy, the colours were royal
and the audience was star studded. Gauri Khan, Mehr Jessia and boyfriend
Dino Morea were there throughout and Karan Johar took to the catwalk
for the pretty designer who already has a foothold in London's Notting
Hill. |

Sanjay Malhotra
is capable of fabulous formal western and fusion clothing. Preferring
to stick to a basic colour palette, he finds too many colours confusing,
his passion is to play with fabric and silhouette. Juxtaposing the
East and West coatees become coats and the torso of a three piece
suit is paired with a skirt. When Twain said, 'And never the two
shall meet', he was very much mistaken.
