tuneup
Vocal vixen, sonorous strings and defiant drums, do a good album make!

By Amar Ayaz

In weekly meetings between the Instep Intelligentsia, many great ideas are spawned, written and stored in a vault. Even though said vault exists in our heads, which results in misplacement of certain schemes, we manage to deliver on the promising ones. With that said, this latest piece, which if well received, will be a monthly addition to start, is on music.

Whilst listening and discussing new tunes, it dawned on us to share new sounds with everyone. Just because of a glitch in my computer I cannot update my iPod doesn't mean you can't also. So without further delay, here are some fresh tunes for your enjoyment.

I have divided it into four sections to make for an easier, quicker read so that you can D/L (I believe that is the term for download these days) them ASAP!

The Dead Weather
It seems that Jack White loves to jam. Considering the various bands he has led and the wide range of artists he has performed with (from rock icons Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones to the soulful Alicia Keys and Loretta Lynn) White comes across as a man obsessed with music. The band, comprised of Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs and The Greenhornes), is led by Jack White (The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, amongst others).

They came together at Jack White's Third Man Studio in Nashville, where he also owns an old-school record shop, for a jam and never looked back. They created and performed songs spontaneously, "There was no time to think about what it was. It just was," White epitomizes.

Their debut album Horehound dropped in July of last year and fared well in North America and the U.K. Their upcoming album Sea Of Cowards is slated to release mid-May, but you can listen to their single 'Die By The Drop' which just hit the internet.

Also for sheer amusement a look at 'Their Oral History And Future' is a must to see that they aren't entirely dark.

Alison Mosshart is The Dead Weather's vocal weapon which will make you take notice. It has been a while since a female vocalist has graced the stage as she does. Her smoky, breathy vocals lend the bluesy female touch which is duly complimented by some awesome instrumentals. White plays guitar and drums, while blending his voice with Mosshart's from time to time. Fertita and Lawrence seem to play every instrument on the album which is testament to their eclectic electricity.
The Dead Weather is '70s inspired dirt rock; it is a darker version of the blues, a distant relative with stubble and scotch-breath. Ultimately the raw-ness is what will make it resonate through your speakers, while finding some relevance.
