Music
is all about crossing borders and while Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's collaboration
with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Bally Sagoo may have brought that
home to Pakistan; it's a genre that has been taking hold steadily
in the past few years, with the rise of Bollywood's influence. Instep
presents the must have crossover music to be heard in recent times. |

Chamma
Chamma
China Gate
Hindi Sad Diamonds
OST Moulin Rouge
The multi starrer
and forgettable 90s Bollywood film China Gate had one highlight
- Urmila's performance of 'Chamma Chamma'. That song became an instant
hit with its catchy lyrics ('chamma chamma, re chamma chamma' -
that's easy listening for you!) and the item number feel.
A few years down the road, 'Chamma Chamma' reappeared in - very
oddly - the hit musical film Moulin Rouge starring Nicole Kidman
and Ewan McGregor. The Moulin Rouge version was filmed with Nicole
Kidman dancing in an Indian outfit and features a sample of 'Chamma
Chamma', which has been remixed and is followed by an English vocal
track While Indian musicians celebrated 'Chamma Chamma' being picked
up for an English musical film, I personally think the original
song had more punch and sparkle than 'Hindi Sad Diamonds'. Fancy
title and remixes do not always a good song make! Do download them
both to get a feel of East meets West in a truly filmi way. |

Powerless
Nelly Furtado feat. Josh
Nelly Furtado was already riding a wave of success when her track
'Powerless' was remixed featuring the then up and coming band Josh.
'Powerless' became a hit that could be heard everywhere in 2003. 'Powerless'
is a very catchy, upbeat song that marked the first of West meets
East crossovers. Why'd it become so popular? What set 'Powerless (Josh
Desi Remix)' from the other millions of remixes that were being churned
out that year was that the remix done in a very unobtrusive, clean
way and doesn't feature the obnoxious rap lyrics that DJs often throw
into Indian songs. Nelly Furtado spoke about the remix and said, "Well
I've already done Indian remixes in the |
|
past. In particular I had an I'm Like A Bird remix and I really liked
that a lot. And Josh are Canadian - they're from Montreal actually.
Right away, they did the track and I loved it. I thought it had a
great beat and it gets a lot of play on hip-hop stations here. It
has a lot of hip hop energy to it." A must download for fans
of remixes! |

Tere
Bin Nahi Lagda
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Rediscover the best of qawwali music by downloading Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan's 'Tere Bin Nahi Lagda'. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan put Pakistani
music on the world music map, first by his collaboration with Peter
Gabriel on the Dead Man Walking soundtrack, and a huge number of sold-out
concerts all over the world. While his songs have been featured on
a number of film soundtracks, a much-unknown fact is that 'Tere Bin
Nahi Lagda' was on an episode of the hit TV show Sex and the City.
This romantic song with Nusrat's beautiful voice is a perfect listen
for when you're in a love struck mood! 'Tere bin nahi lagda dil mera
sohniya' may be very simple lyrics, but add to that |
|
the magic of Nusrat and the qawali genre and you've got perfection.

Face
of Love
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Eddie Vedder
Off the soundtrack for Dead Man Walking with Peter Gabriel, Nusrat's
work with Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder on this song is East-meets-West
collaboration at its best. 'Face of love' is not your stereotypical
love song. It opens with Nusrat's philosophical musings of a life
without love, followed by Eddie Vedder singing about the beauty of
love. Eddie's vocals are an interesting parallel to Nusrat's in this
song and the lyrics 'only one hour / of this pure love / to last a
life' highlight Nusrat's sufi interpretation of love best. This critically
acclaimed song, termed by Rolling Stone as 'the best thing Vedder
has ever done' is a must download for all music aficionados. |

Singh
is Kinng
Singh is Kinng feat. Snoop Dogg
The song that's been making headlines all over during the past few
weeks is off the soundtrack for Singh is Kinng. Snoop Dogg's headway
into the Bollywood music fray is more interesting because its part
of a series of collaborations and appearanaces that Hollywood is actively
pursuing and not the other way around. This track features Snoop rapping
away. Note the lyrics: 'Ferraris, Bugattis, and Maseratis / Snoop
D O double G, the life of the party / Lay back, stay back, i'm in
the Maybach / This ain't James Brown,
but it's the big payback / Watch me zoom by, make
|
|
it boom by / What up to all the ladies hanging out in Mumbai / Cheese
make dollars, east west masala / Singh is the king, so you all have
to follow'. While the song is nothing special to speak of, download
it just to hear the interesting combination of the rapper with Bollywood
music!
