Music has moved from classical to pop and then to remixes. We have
had our share of remixes; some good while others have been irritating
beyond words! But of late, singers have started to do cover versions
of the goldies, which appears to be a better option than remixing
it with a lot of unpleasant beats. Cover songs also serve the purpose
of reviving long forgotten music to a younger generation who's never
heard of them! Instep presents, the best of the reworked Pakistani
classics..
'Aaye Mausam Rangeele'
Josh
Original by Zubeida Khanum
'Aaye Mausam Rangeele Suhane' was originally sung by Zubeida Khanum
for the movie Saath Laakh in 1957 and was an instant hit. People remember
Sabiha Khanum dancing in the fields and singing the song for her beloved.
This tune was revived by Josh in their latest album Mausam. The album
did well in the markets both nationally and internationally making
the title track a favourite amongst the masses. It further came into
limelight when Josh shot a video of the song in Karachi with director
Umar Anwar. To pay tribute to the legend Zubeida Khanum, the video
starts off with Josh watching the original video of 'Aaye Mausam'
on television. It was a very decent attempt by Josh which maintained
the sweet tone attached to it by avoiding pumped up beats to the melodious
tune. |

'Yeh Shaam'
Kaavish
Original by Vital Signs
The beautiful mellow song 'Yeh Shaam' featured in the first Vital
Sign album titled'Vital Signs' and is one of their best songs. It
had the amazing VS sound, Junaid Jamshed vocals and of course Shoaib
Mansoor-directed video. The band Kaavish has redone this sweet song
with Nayyara Noor's son, Jaffer, on vocals.
Those who have heard Kaavish's 'Bachpan' and 'Chhoti Khushiyan' know
that Jaffer has got a particular voice tone that matches none other.
When I came to know that Kaavish has re-sung the great VS |

track, I thought it would be a disaster but I was glad to be proven
wrong. Kaavish's 'Yeh Shaam' may not be as inspiring as the original
version but it was a treat to listen to. They first sang it live for
a television show in which they sang a couple of other covers too
but 'Yeh Shaam' was so much appreciated that Kaavish put up that song
on their website too. So, now you know where to get it from! |

Sar Kiye Yeh Pahar'
Aaroh
Original by Strings
Who hasn't heard (and fallen in love with) Bilal Maqsood's vocals
in 'Sar Kiye Yeh Pahar', released in the year 1992! It's the song
that helped Strings mark their identity internationally. We still
love to watch its video with the four band members (as Strings previously
was) having a great time at Cape Mount.
To revive the spirit of 'Sir Kiye Yeh Pahar', Aaroh re-sung the
song in 2002 during the famed Battle of the Bands show. They added
a few instruments giving it

the
Aaroh feel but didn't lose the original charm of the song. They gained
accolades from the judges and their version
of 'Sir Kiye Yeh Pahar' created a name of its own. It's important
to mention that Aaroh even won the competition with E.P. as the runner
up. If you still haven't this song, do get your hands on it otherwise
you will regret missing out a cool version of 'Sir Kiye Yeh Pahar'. |

'Lal Meri Pat'
Junoon
Folk song sung by Abida Parveen and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan among
others
Some songs are just so grand that re-making makes it quite a difficult
task for the singers. 'Lal Meri Pat' is one of those songs but Junoon
never planned of re-doing it. It was during a concert at Manhattan
that they decided to sing 'Lal Meri Pat' to the audience craving
for some folk sound far away from their homeland.
A lot of people still remember Abida Parveen or Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan's 'Lal Meri Pat' and they loved

it!
Junoon, however, made it more rocking with their additional guitars
riffs. Ali Azmat's vocals did pure justice to the song. At that time,
no one thought a segment of the concert would be so successful to
find its place in Junoon's album Millenium edition. Add 'Lal Meri
Pat' to your ipod and enjoy the pop rendition of this folk song. |

Jaise
Jante Nahin'
Usman Shani
Original by Ahmed Rushdie
'Jaise Jante Nahin' was originally composed by Nisar Bazmi for the
Mohammad Ali - Zeba starrer 'Jaise Jante Nahin'. This Ahmed Rushdie
song was one of the best tunes of the year 1969 and was a reason for
the movie to fare high at the box office.
Now after all these years, Usman Shani revived this tune making it
a bit more happening and fun. He has added a few lines in English
to give it a pop flavor and make it more appealing for young music
aficionados. The video of the song complements it as well where they
have portrayed a college ambiance and the usual boy-falls-for-a-girl
situation. Though it's nothing extraordinary but the song was successful
enough to grab the attention of today's generation by satisfying their
craving for decent music. It's one of those tunes that you can enjoy
with your parents, so add it to your personal collection and score
brownie points with your elders!
