Detailing
Designers abroad showing fall 2009 trends put tons of detailing in their collections - from the layers and pleating in miniskirts and harem pants to evening dresses that were worthy of a red carpet. Pleat your fabric away, whether its shirt cuffs or bodices, and stand out. Designer versions of this trend include the pleated tops by Adnan Pardesy, the great origami cut-outs by Sadaf Malaterre (left) and the ruched white shirts at Teejays.

Winged eyeliner
The 1930s, old school Hollywood glamour look is back with winged eyeliner. This look has been seen on the runways and red carpets (shown on Nicole Richie below) and it's fairly effortless to achieve. Line your eyes with a pencil first to define it and then apply eyeliner.
Practice at home before you step out though - so you don't have liner smeared all over your eyes, and try not to go too overboard, it should only 'wing' out a bit and not all the way to your hairline. It's a great look that works from daytime to evenings.

Exaggerated shoulders
Take a cue from Balmain and the horde of designers who followed suit by putting exaggerated, almost Star Trek-esque shoulders in their collections. It's a look that is extremely difficult to carry off - but if you have an eye for it and a more statuesque bearing - why not?

...and get rid of the overdone ones
T-shirts and scarves

From the supermarkets to the streets, the t-shirt and scarf look has been found everywhere. Whether its guys (who seem to have taken a cue from the keffiyah sporting Atif Aslam) or girls (who have been inspired by way too many similar retail shoots) - the scarf with a t-shirt look was seen all through summer. One doesn't understand exactly how these souls breathe in the stifling humidity with fabric swathed around their neck - but until winter rolls around, it may be time to give it a rest.

The baby doll dress
Why even the most petite of women have adopted the baby doll dress - that makes them look like they've reached elephant-like proportions - is beyond us, but why the trend is still carrying on is beyond us too. This trend is over and done with.

Poker straight hair
The poker straight hair look - thanks to the number of hair straighteners being available at every price range in the country - has become as much of a craze as those dreadful blonde streaks that were all the rage a few years ago. Doesn't anyone want their natural hair back anymore? Do women even remember what the real texture of their hair is!?

Silk cuffs
The lawn catalogues have much to be blamed for the abomination of this trend. Taking a cue from the Sana and Safinaz lawn collection look book, women have adopted the silk cuffs and hems that were shown in it. However, the popularity of the look - which does jazz up an ordinary print - has rendered women into clones. May we suggest you replace the silk with banarsi (ala Deepika Padukone in Love Aaj Kal) instead - would also be a great way to use all those old banarsi shirts that you don't wear anymore.
