Lafangey
Parindey is the latest offering by Yash Raj Films, directed by
Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Aditya Chopra. It stares Deepika
Padukone and Neil Niten Mukesh in the lead. Last year it was Kaminey,
this year it’s Lafangey Parindey, I wonder what’s
coming up next and what’s up with these names?
Lafangey Parindey is a story about a group of youngsters living
in the backstreets of Mumbai. It’s a unique love story of
Nandu [Neil Niten Mukesh] and Pinky [Deepika Padukone] based on
friendship and hope. Nandu is a superb boxing champion, who can
even knock down his opponent while blindfolded. He’s wild,
raw, fierce, hungry to win and born to fight. He’s known
as the local hero in his social circle but all this changes when
he meets Pinky.
Pinky is ambitious, strong headed, talented and born to fly! She
is inspired and talented. Even though she has a boring 9 to 5
job, she is an excellent dancer on the skates. Her life’s
ambition is to rise above mediocrity and carve a niche for herself;
the only barrier is that she’s blind. Lafangey Parindey
is a story about these two totally different personalities who
are destined to meet and with a bunch of four friends they set
out to achieve the impossible!
The music of Lafangey Parindey just released and is slightly disappointing
considering it is a Yash Raj Film! The title track has a very
western touch to it, in fact for the first one minute of the song
no one can tell it’s Indian until the lyrics begin. That’s
when it takes an Indian route. As the song goes on it gets into
a soft rock mood which then prevails throughout till the end.
The tune is energetic yet you will have to listen to it more than
once to get it on your tongue.
The second song of the album again has "lafanga" in
it. It’s called ‘Man Lafanga’ and is definitely
better than the title track. It’s a perfect blend of melody
and the acoustic guitar. Throw in the fact that it’s well
sung by Mohit Chauhan and you get a song that creeps up on you
as you listen to it. It had a club mix version as well in the
album, but that just ruined the sound of the song. I would definitely
prefer the original version.
‘Dhatad Tatad’, is supposed to be a dance track doesn’t
really create the magic it should. Dance tracks should make you
feel like getting up and tapping your feet, this one just makes
you feel like switching the song. It’s a rock based song
with no dull moments but still nothing special.
‘Nain Parindey’ on the other hand is a soft and melodious
track with a breathtaking tune. Shilpa Rao’s vocals add
a charm in the already beautiful tune of this track which makes
it the best of the album without any doubt. The lyrics are different
and specifically written for a blind girl so it will be more of
impact in the film setting.
Sticking strictly to rock theme, ‘Rang Daalain’ is
a song which aims to target the youth like the movie itself. It’s
pretty much like the title track because the lyrics talk about
the same things; a person’s attitude and a gang of boys
all set to rule the world and have fun while at it. However, it’s
not a track you will get addicted to after hearing it once.
The instrumental of the album, ‘Born To Fly’ sums
up the entire album and has tunes of all the songs mixed together.
It’s the kind that would enhance the scene where it will
be used in the film. How well it is used there is something only
time will tell. Lafangey Parindey releases on the 20th August
[hopefully, in a cinema near us too!] but till then Bollywood
buffs can listen to its music which released last week.
