Fashion gets volume

It was huge - in terms of the 6000 plus outfits sent down the runways by 221 designers over a week that lasted nine days - and also in the evolving design sensibility that took fashion away from ultra thin chic, focusing more on soft femininity and curves. At the end of the days, New York Fashion Week did redefine the volume of the industry that brings in billions of dollars annually to New York alone. With Pakistan Fashion Week now on the international calender, we can also hope for a fashion future that holds promise.

Diane Von Furstenberg introduced a new ease and took a step away from her iconic and much copied wrap dress. Instead, working on a Spanish theme inspired by memories of her student days in Madrid and of the recent Pedro Almodóvar movie Volver, the collection was a vision of a strong, independent woman.

(Above, right) Tommy Hilfiger returned to Fashion Week after a several-season hiatus with the styles that made him famous in the first place - preppy classics. Tweeds, cable-knit sweaters, plaids and peacoats were all important in the collection, contributing to a sophisticated twist on the collegiate look.

Marc Jacob's genius has always been to make a vision out of vintage and this collection seemed to have stepped out of the fashionable seventies with a contemporary twist. The clothing was made to exalted levels of luxury, the knits in ribbed cashmere, the gloves in the most pliable leather and the bags in ostrich or crocodile.

The most talked about deal at NYFW was the collaboration between Proenza Schouler and Target, the retail store with 1494 stores in America. While buyers were eager to see collection for a glimpse of what would be available at the low cost -high fashion stores. Merely five years into the launch of their label, that's what you call expansion! Check page 40 for more.

Ralph Lauren's autumn/winter collection bathed in a halo of gold, constructed with elegant moderation and versatility but without an ounce of bling. His creations came from glamorous black silks, rich brown suedes and even a bit of leather thrown as well as customary winter knits like cashmere and tweed. Understated and chic, it glowed in style.
