Atif
grabs Filmfare nomination! |
|
Filmfare
Awards are like the Oscars of Bollywood and this year Atif Aslam has
reason to celebrate as he has picked his first Filmfare nomination
in the category of Best Playback Singing Male. Atif is nominated for
'Tere Bin' from the film, Bas Ek Pal. His competitors include Sonu
Nigam for the title track of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Zubin Ali for
'Ya Ali' (Gangster), Shaan and Kailash Kher for 'Chand Sifarish' (Fanaa)
and Himmesh Reshammiya for 'Jhalak Dhiklaja' (Aksar). It comes as
a shock to find out that Shafqat did not win a nomination for 'Mitwa'
from KANK despite it being far superior to Sonu's title track. When
it comes to singing, Shafqat is a class act. It seems unfair, especially
since Himmesh Reshammiya too was acknowledged for his mediocre number.
Then again, they are Filmfare India awards and one can hardly expect
a Pakistani artiste to overshadow the Indian counterparts. And anyway,
it's not like the Filmfares are the fairest of awards anyway. Their
recently posted Bollywood power list for 2006 is being heavily criticized
for not carrying Aamir Khan's name despite his monster hits Rang De
Basanti and Fanaa. But coming back to Atif, he is in for some stiff
competition as Shaan-Kailash are hot favourites. Here's hoping Atif
Aslam does pick up an award. He did sing exceptionally well in this
track compared to his recent pop ditty, 'Doorie'. |

Where
is Jal? |
|
Now that
Atif Aslam has released Doorie, Jal needs to come out with a bigger
bang and though insiders are aware that the band is working on its
next album, the date of release isn't yet confirmed. Speaking to
Instep, bandleader Goher Mumtaz commented, "We are done with
60 per cent of the album. Mekaal Hasan will produce it. It is taking
longer but we want to make sure that the second album is better
in every aspect. All three of us have matured. With the first album,
we were unclear about a lot of things but now we have grown as musicians.
Our lyrics, sound and songwriting will reflect that." Goher
was tight-lipped about the release but he did say that the album
should be out this summer. Jal also recently performed in Nepal
for the first time and got great reviews. "Nepal tour was great.
We did three shows and were really happy to see Jal fan following
there. Honestly, that wasn't expected," stated Goher. In December,
Jal flew to Goa and performed at the International Film Festival
of India with the likes of Sukhbir. The band also plans to release
quite a few videos from the new album. The first one will be for
a track called 'Sajni'. Jal is in for some tough competition as
Strings, Ali Azmat and Mekaal Hasan Band also plan to release their
albums this year. It'll be an exciting year in music!

U2
pays a tribute |
|
|
If
there is one band that continues to churn out great tracks attached
with fantastic videos, it is U2. This legendary band, even after 20
years, remains an example in the music world. Their latest video,
'Window in the Skies' is the latest success. Musically, it's a soft
rock number and lyrically, haunting yet melodic with a tinge of pessimism.
The video barely shows U2 members; if you watch closely, you'll see
each member of the band in a concert amongst the audience. 'Window
in the Skies' is perhaps U2's ode to music as it shows every music
legend one can think of in the video. All clips show legendary musicians,
old and new in concert and the way it's been joined together looks
like they are all singing the U2 track. Some names include Elvis Presley,
Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and Jay-Z among many others.
This is a must-see video. If you can't find it on television, log
on to YouTube and check it out! |
