Daniyal
Mueenuddin is all set to be 2009’s most feted Pakistani
author. He appeared on the literary radar with his short stories
that were published in The New Yorker, and with his debut
collection of short stories - titled In Other Rooms, Other
Wonders - Pakistani fiction has a new star. The New York Times
and Washington Post have heralded Daniyal’s book, with
the Post calling it “a collection full of pleasures.”
And rightly so - it has become the talk of town! The short
stories are set against a landscape of rural Punjab, where
the author is based as well, and are definitely a must-read,
for they paint a vivid picture of relationships, both of love
and obligation, and they show a new dimension to life in Pakistan
for a reader outside of the subcontinent. If you read any
book this year, make it In Other Rooms, Other Wonders! Daniyal
is definitely enforcing Pakistan’s imprint on the literary
world and that’s why he is Instep’s hotstepper
of the week! |
