It’s
that time of the year again; the time when woolies go back into
hibernation and women go into mass hysteria over annual lawn collections
put out by their favourite labels. Yahsir Waheed and Junaid Jamshed
have been the first to kick off in Karachi, obviously because summer
sets foot in this city before the rest of the country. And while
textile mills in Karachi and Faisalabad will be churning out designs
for the next six months, it is these ‘designer’ exhibitions
that women go gaga over. Upcoming collections to look out for will
be those by Sana Safinaz, the design duo who always have exclusive
prints which sell out in the blink of an eye and are never found
in markets thereafter.
Islamabad based designer Sobia Nazir will also be launching her
second collection of lawn prints in the first week of March. There
will undoubtedly be more to follow.
So with this astounding wide variety of prints to chose from, one
must have a clear mind as to what one wants to buy. It’s the
worst feeling to indulge on a whim and then end up with a wardrobe
full of oddly unaesthetic (even anesthetic) clothes that you don’t
really want to wear. The three piece printed format should not be
indulged in. And thank God for designers like Yahsir Waheed who
allow two piece sales, as well as other designers who keep fabric
for the shalwar either plain or versatile enough to be adapted into
another shirt. When buying lawn remember that Christmas is over!
Colours in high fashion these days are apricot, tangerine, magenta,
fuchsia and warm shades of yellow. Whites and nudes are classics
and can never go out of fashion. When picking your prints go for
the odd and unconventional and then concentrate on the silhouette.
Remember that since harem pants and floaty, loose shirts have taken
over from slim capris and short tunics, you will be needing more
fabric than the normal two and a half yards cut pieces that are
sold at these exhibitions. Happy hunting!
A selection of Yahsir Waheed prints from the Spring Summer 2009
collection can be seen on Style pages 34 and 37. The full range
is currently being exhibited at Marriott Hotel, Karachi until February
23 (tomorrow).
